Hardy and Cole

Adam Cole attacks Jeff Hardy before the bell rings. Jeff Hardy is selling the attack as Adam Cole stays on the attack. We cut to picture in picture. During the commercial, Hardy tries to fight back, but Adam Cole is one step ahead of him each time.

Cole reverts back to rest holds each time. After the break, Hardy begins fighting back. He goes for a Whisper in the Wind, but he misses. Cole tries to hit him with a Superkick mid-flip, but the timing was all off.

Hardy hits a Twist of Fate, a neck breaker, and goes for the Swanton Bomb. He misses. Cole hits The Boom. Adam Cole advances to the next round of The Owen.

After the match, The Hardys get attacked by Cole and The Bucks. Darby and Sting come down to make the save, but ReDRagon try to make the save. The Young Bucks try to Double Superkick Sting, but they hit him in the shoulders instead of the head. They then wrap a chair around Sting’s ankle and O’Reilly stomps it to take out Sting. This feels like we’re heading to an 8-man tag of some sort. Who knows???

There were really strong points (Page/Punk and MJF/Wardlow). There were some less than stellar moments. Overall, this show didn’t quite hit the mark for me.

Joker Number 2

Who will it be facing Britt Baker? It’s Maki Itoh. They were tag partners at one time and now they are facing off. Not that I don’t like Maki Itoh, but this isn’t exactly the massive surprise I was expecting in the women’s tournament.

The majority of this match was during the picture in picture commercial break. Britt Baker wins with the Lockjaw. Itoh got in a few moves including a nice little falling headbutt and a middle finger in the face.

However, Baker was fairly dominant throughout. Baker advances to the next round in the Owen. She’ll be facing Toni Storm. Toni comes out and stares down Baker.

Tony Schiavone gets in the ring and says that next week will be the 3 year anniversary of AEW. Before he can finish his thoughts, Serena Deeb comes out. She tells Tony he’s an idiot because he picked Thunder Rosa in their upcoming match. Deeb calls out Dustin.

She’s mad at him as well for picking Rosa. After she talks some trash and talks about coming up in a time that was difficult for women. She wants respect for doing so.

Eventually, Thunder Rosa comes out. Dustin holds her back. Rosa accidentally drills him in the face with an Elbow. As she’s checking on him, Deeb drills Rosa with the belt in the head.

This segment was not good. Deeb and Rosa’s best qualities are between the bells. Instead of letting them showcase their skills through physicality, this feud has been built through words. I believe this is a misstep in how they’ve booked this one.

JAS vs. BCC

Jericho and William Regal are facing off. Regal, Eddie Kingston, Moxley, Santana, Ortiz, and Danielson are in the ring. JAS comes out on the stage.

Jericho says he thought Regal would be dead by now. Regal just chuckles it off. Jericho says he should have been a champ, but he was just an addict. Jericho insults every member of the crew in the ring.

Regal gets an opportunity to respond. Regal says he has taken Jericho’s toothbrush and stuck it up his butt on every show he’s ever been on with him. Jericho wants to challenge them to Stadium Stampede.

Moxley says no. He says it is going to be 5 on 5 in the arena. It’s going to be in front of fans. He says it’s a gang fight. It’s going to be anything goes. Kingston is going to go after Jericho, but Danielson stops him. Will the group be able to get along?

Backstage, Sydal and Donte Martin challenge BCC to a match on Rampage.

Kyle O'Reilly vs. Rey Fenix in the Owen

Rey Fenix and Kyle O’Reilly are squaring off in the Owen. Talk about a clash of styles. Fenix is the epitome of high flying. O’Reilly is a technical wizard.

Prior to the match, Roppongi Vice is back together full time and want to challenge for The ROH Tag Titles. They challenge FTR to a match.

Fenix unleashes a high-flying attack. O’Reilly takes a big bump on the outside. He fights back. O’Reilly start attacking the arm that had the injury that led to Fenix being out for a few months.

Both of these guys are so good. Fenix hits some kicks and strikes. O’Reilly counters with suplexes and submissions. They then exchange strikes. Both men hit open hand slaps to the other’s face. They both fall out.

I don’t even know how to describe the fighting spirit exchange they had accurately. At the end, Fenix hits a tight rope hurricanrana onto O’Reilly who was on the apron. Both men get back in the ring and Fenix goes for a springboard DDT. O’Reilly catches him and puts him in the armbar. Eventually, Fenix has to tap.

O’Reilly moves on to face Samoa Joe in the next round of the open. That was a great, action-packed match. I didn’t want either to lose.

MJF, Wardlow, and a belt

One of the stipulations for Wardlow to get to face MJF is he has to take 10 lashes from a belt. MJF is out to rile up the crowd, which he is so, so good at.

Wardlow gets his handcuffed entrance. He’s not wearing a shirt this dude is a stud. The crowd does the Wardlow chant. As he gets in the ring, MJF spits in his face.

Lash number 1 and Wardlow laughs. He doesn’t react at all to any of the lashes. MJF gets so mad he takes his shirt off. He then just starts whipping him over and over. Spears pulls him off. Wardlow…Nothing. The marks are on his back. Spears really winds up for number 9. Wardlow finally shows some reaction.

As he goes for number 10, MJF kicks him in the crotch. He then whips him a lot. Wardlow is still handcuffed. MJF and Spears beat him up. MJF pulls out the diamond ring and drills him in the head. Spears hits him with the C4. MJF counts the pin as Spears makes the cover.

This show has built the hype for Wardlow/MJF and Page/Punk very effectively but in two very, very different ways.

Swerve and Lee

Swerve Strickland and Keith Lee are taking on a team with a very similar build. JD Drake and Anthony Henry are their opponents.

Not much to say about this one. It was fast. It was one-sided. We got a JR impression of Taz. Lee and Swerve hit their new finisher where they combine a Spirit Bomb and a Double Foot Stomp. They get the win.

After the match, Lee grabs the mic and says they are now in the top 5. He’s about to say they are going to challenge for the tag team championship. This brings out Starks and Hobbs. They are the challengers for the tag titles based on the victory last week.

After some more insults, Christian and Jurassic Express come out. Christian challenges both teams in a 3-way at DON. I think I typed that either on Rampage or last week. Christian also wants to have a 3-way with Jungle Boy, Swerve, and Ricky Starks.

Backstage, Red Velvet and Kris Statlander are facing off before they face off on Friday. That was not the best thing I’ve ever witnessed.

Hangman Page

Konosuke Takeshita is here to take on Hangman Page. Punk is on commentary. Takeshita seems to be one of those stars Tony Khan must see something in. You can just tell in the way commentary talks about him and the way he’s presented. It’s similar to how Wheeler Yuta was presented early on.

Takeshita comes out on fire, but Hangman Page quickly battles back. The crowd chants Cowboy S. In a really fun little sequence, both men trade Helluva Kicks and Release German Suplexes. They both go for clotheslines, but they both miss. Eventually, they hit them at the same time and both are down.

Takeshita avoids a Buckshot Lariat. He hits the big jumping knee and gets a very close two count. Page consistently wastes time in this one by looking up at CM Punk. Each time, he gets caught by Takeshita with some kind of counter.

Hangman hits the Buckshot Lariat. He then grabs Takeshita and hits the GTS. Punk says he has him right where he wants him on commentary. Page is staring him down after the match and invites him to the ring. Each man poses. Then they get closer. Then they pose. Eventually, Hangman and Punk circle each other. Hangman walks up the ramp and walks away.

Joe-Ker

Samoa Joe is going up against the Joker in the Owen. The Joker is Johnny Elite (John Morrison). Let’s go Joe. Personally, I’m not overly excited by this joker. Apparently, neither is the crowd as usually fans are excited by the new person. In this case, they are still chanting Joe.

Johnny Elite has not been sharp in this one. He did his side flip dive thing to the outside where he barely made contact and only because Samoa Joe leaned in. Later he hit a 450 splash where he came up about 3 feet short and landed on his knees.

In the end, Samoa Joe puts him away with the Muscle Buster. Joe moves on in The Owen. Joe is so good. His move set is vicious and he looks like he could just maul you all the time.

After the match, Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt run down and attack him. Satnam Singh also walks down. As the threesome takes him out, they drill him with a lead pipe to the shoulder. They are trying to take him out of the tournament. The Best Friends and Rocky Romero run down to save him.

Meanwhile, we cut to backstage and Jeff Hardy is medically cleared. The Young Bucks walk up and try to convince him to pull out of the tournament. They are trying to say Adam Cole is going to kick his butt.

Out next is CM Punk is here.
