10 Best WWE Backlash Matches Of All Time

3. John Cena vs. Edge – Backlash 2009

Edge is perhaps John Cena’s best rival. They always had great chemistry together and their final match together was maybe their best. At Backlash 2009, Edge faced Cena in a Last Man Standing match for the World Heavyweight Championship.

There were some spots in this match that have never been done since, like Cena getting chokeslammed into a searchlight by Big Show. With crazy stuff like that happening it is no wonder that this match became as good as it did. This match has a sense of finality to it as these two rivals would go their separate ways afterward, putting a cap on one of WWE’s all-time best feuds.

2. John Cena vs. Edge vs. Randy Orton vs. Shawn Michaels – Backlash 2007

John Cena was a world-beater in 2007. He ended up holding the WWE Championship for over a year and this was one of his greatest challenges. At Backlash 2007, he defended the title against Edge, Randy Orton, and his WrestleMania 23 opponent Shawn Michaels. It was a masterpiece.

Edge and Orton had been a tag team as had Cena and Michaels so there was a ton of play involving partners teaming up only to betray their teammate. This made for great drama and one hell of a closing sequence. The end of this match saw everyone hit finishers on the other with fans expecting Michaels to win as he was the last man standing. Unfortunately for HBK, he Superkicked Cena right onto Orton allowing Cena to retain. It is infuriating as a fan of Shawn Michaels but it is one of the best finishing sequences in WWE history.

1. Randy Orton vs. Cactus Jack – Backlash 2004

If you want to talk about an all-time classic match taking place at Backlash, this is the match. Mick Foley often calls this the best match of his career and I think it is safe to say it is the best match of Orton’s career as well.

Orton had pinned Foley at WrestleMania XX and now they were set to have a Hardcore match. Orton was looked at as a talented young man but he was missing that aura of being a tough guy. That mindset ended here. Foley went to town on young Randy, tearing his face open with barbed-wire and slamming him into thumbtacks. Orton was not feeling great after those tacks but it was the spot that made him a believable tough guy.

This wasn’t just a weapons-fest either. This is a good match. They had fantastic chemistry together and it holds up as a great wrestling match all these years later. If you care to look back on some great Backlash matches, this is a must-watch.
