10 MUST-SEE Forgotten WWE Ladder Matches

7. The Hardys vs. World’s Greatest Tag Team – One Night Stand 2007

The Hardys had a resurgence in 2007 when they won the World Tag Team Championships the night after WrestleMania 23. Their greatest title defense came at One Night Stand 2007 when they defeated Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin to retain the gold.

Benjamin had been in multiple ladder matches to this point but the World’s Greatest Tag Team was a pair of great wrestlers. This allowed them to pull off a number of creative and athletic feats in this match. There were a number of blown spots and there was a feeling of sloppiness to it but in a ladder match that can increase the drama as well. It is a shame this match took place on such a nothing show and hasn’t been remembered since because it was a gem among some very average matches.

6. John Morrison vs. Sheamus – TLC 2010

Honestly, remembering this match was the catalyst for this whole list. In 2010, John Morrison and Sheamus competed in a ladder match to become the number one contender for the WWE Championship. This match was called a star-making performance for John Morrison who defeated Sheamus to become the number one contender.

Of course, Morrison didn’t pan out as main event star in WWE and was released almost exactly a year later but that does not take away from this match. Morrison was different from a typical high flyer in 2010. He wasn’t a luchador like a Rey Mysterio but he also wasn’t a risk-taker like Jeff Hardy. Instead, he used his agility to his advantage and it is very refreshing to watch against a bruiser like Sheamus.

5. New Day vs. The Usos vs. Lucha Dragons – TLC 2015

This match is likely on this list simply due to there being so many TLC pay per views at this point. They really all start to blend into one. In 2015, the New Day were still obnoxious heels and they were forced to defend their tag team titles against the Usos and the Lucha Dragons. As these were three hungry, hard-working teams, they put on a spectacle.

The moment when Kalisto hit the Salida del Sol off the top of a ladder, through another ladder is one of the craziest things you will ever see in a ladder match. Unfortunately, despite how hard these guys worked, this match has been forgotten. Perhaps WWE does not want to remind fans of the New Day’s heelish ways.

4. Christian vs. Shelton Benjamin – TLC 2009

Christian continues to pop up on this list. This is a testament to how great a competitor he was and also how little WWE has done to highlight him. Upon his return to WWE in 2009, Christian was bizarrely put on the ECW brand. An odd choice for sure, but he became the one thing that was worth watching on the show. He carried the ECW Championship twice with his second reign being the best in the title’s history. In WWE, of course.

Heading into TLC 2009, Christian and Shelton Benjamin were set to square off in a ladder match. They made it clear they were intending to steal the show and steal the show they did. These were two great ladder match specialists and they put on a fantastic match. This was a treat to watch and they put themselves through perhaps too much punishment for the ECW title but you try telling either of them to slow down.
