9. Are Battle Royals over-used?
Have I become a jaded writer, or are other people noticing that battle royals don’t feel particularly exciting anymore? It feels like that’s the go-to when you don’t have anything more interesting to do. Tag team contendership, singles number 1 contenderships, uterus cup trophies, the André The Giant Memorial Battle Royals, Saudiest Royal Rumble… These events start to lose something after a while.
WWE is somehow going to be surprised when interest starts to wane for the Royal Rumble, which has always proven to be a popular show. I’m of the mind that if you want to protect the match type, then keep them rare and keep them important. This is especially true because, on the night of the Rumble itself, we’re now getting two separate Royal Rumble matches every year.
