10. Rey Mysterio vs. Kurt Angle – SummerSlam 2002
Rey Mysterio was still a new face to WWE fans when SummerSlam 2002 rolled around. He had yet to have a breakthrough performance but that changed when he ran into Kurt Angle. Together, Angle and Mysterio had one of the best opening matches in WWE history.
Angle and Mysterio always had great chemistry together and this was no different. It was a perfect introduction to Mysterio on a big stage as he went hold for hold with an Olympic Gold Medalist. As Mysterio’s first WWE pay per view match, this should be watched from a historical standpoint as well as it being a top-notch match.
9. Rey Misterio Jr. vs. Psicosis – WCW Bash at the Beach 1996
From his introduction to WWE to one of his first WCW pay per view matches, Rey Mysterio (then spelled Misterio) battled Psicosis at Bash at the Beach in 1996. This was the beginning of the cruiserweight style in the United States and the crowd didn’t know how to react at first.
The crowd was dead silent during the early goings. However, by the end, Mysterio and Psicosis had the crowd going wild. There were moments in this match that would be top highlights almost 25 years later. Both men did ridiculous dives to the outside that appeared to hurt themselves as much as they hurt each other. It may not hold up quite as well today, but this is still a quality match and a look into the state of wrestling in 1996.
8. Rey Mysterio vs. John Morrison – SmackDown (September 4, 2009)
Rey Mysterio had a very good reign as Intercontinental Champion in 2009. He had a pair of great title matches against Dolph Ziggler but he knocked it out of the park with John Morrison on SmackDown.
It is not often matches of this quality are available on free television. Mysterio and Morrison wrestle styles that greatly complement each other. This match was a perfect example of that. While Mysterio works a more lucha libre inspired style, Morrison’s agility and high-flying allows him to keep up and create a great match. The crowd was hot for this and it concluded with a fantastic finish. As Mysterio attempted a reverse-rana off the top, Morrison held on and hit Starship Pain for the win.
