10 Rey Mysterio Matches You Have To See

7. Rey Misterio Jr. vs. Ultimo Dragon – WCW World War 3 1996

Ultimo Dragon is one of the most underrated talents in wrestling history. He had some of the best performances in WCW history and one of them was with Rey Mysterio at World War 3 in 1996. Dragon was able to mix the lucha libre style with the hard-hitting Japanese style of his homeland, resulting in great matches with other luchadors.

Unlike the match with Psicosis on this list, fans were into this match from the getgo. Mysterio had been with the company for a few months at this point and fans knew they could expect something special when he was in the ring. This was something special. As one of his best matches at only 21 years of age, this is one you need to seek out.

6. Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho – The Bash 2009

This is one of my personal favourite matches and I am sad it doesn’t get talked about more. Rey Mysterio and Chris Jericho had a fantastic rivalry in 2009 over the Intercontinental Championship and they had their best match at The Bash. This match is a classic with countless counters and reversals.

Jericho was a tremendous bully, wanting to steal Mysterio’s mask at every turn. To the point that Mysterio had to outsmart Jericho late in the match. Jericho removed Mysterio’s mask only to find out he had a second mask on. This was a great finish to a great match but there were so many great moments in this match. Not enough people have seen this one so do yourself a favour and check it out.

5. Rey Mysterio vs. Prince Puma – Lucha Underground Season 2 Finale

By the time we reached 2016, Rey Mysterio was an undisputed lucha libre legend. Competing in the American lucha promotion Lucha Underground, he managed to compete in front of an American audience who greatly appreciated what he had done for the artform. He also got the chance to wrestle many of the people he inspired. One of which, was Prince Puma.

We won’t reveal the secret identity of Prince Puma here but you can probably make the deduction from the tattoos. This match was as emotional as it was exciting. There was a sense that if Puma was able to defeat Mysterio this would be the passing of the torch moment. Thankfully for Mysterio fans everywhere, he still had gas in the tank. You should go out of your way to watch this one because companies like WWE seemed unwilling to put Mysterio in the position to have classic matches at this point in his career.

4. Rey Mysterio, Rey Fenix & Bandido vs. The Golden Elite – All In

It is a shame this match had so much of its time cut because if it had gone its intended length it may have been the best six-man tag match ever. As it stands, it was still one of the best ever and the main event of a truly history show. At All In, Rey Mysterio teamed with Rey Fenix and Bandido to take on the Golden Elite.

Fans popped huge at the prospect of Kota Ibushi and Mysterio mixing it up. As they should, they are two of the best in-ring competitors ever. The true strengths of this match were managing to cram so much action into only 12 minutes and the effort by each man to make newcomer Bandido stand out. The selflessness of the performers is inspiring to look back on. Mysterio will always be known as one of the men involved in the main event of one of the most important events in wrestling history.
