War (1991)
WWE exists within its own bubble and never lets real life get in the way of a story. That has never been more evident than with the recent Dean Ambrose heel turn on the same night his best friend was diagnosed with cancer.
But this sort of thing is not new. WWE have been exploiting real-life issues and trying to turn them into money-making angles for years.
Amongst the most despicable of these was their exploitation of the Gulf War in the early 90s.
At a time where American (and British) soldiers were dying fighting in Iraq, WWE turned American flag-waving hero Sgt. Slaughter heel, had him declare his support for Iraq, win the WWF Title via nefarious means then burn Hulk Hogan shirts.
Many fans tuned out at that point and never returned. The evidence of that can be found in the attendance for WrestleMania VII. The event was supposed to be held at the massive 100,000 capacity Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum but was moved across town to the LA Sports Arena because only 15,000 tickets had been sold.
