10 Times WWE Used Disgusting Tactics To Get Heat (Part 2)

Homophobia (1996)

One of the most intriguing aspects of the controversial Goldust character was the ambiguity over what his true intentions were. When he was using his sexuality in angles with Razor Ramon and Ahmed Johnson, fans had no idea whether that was because he was playing mind games or whether he was “in to them”, so to speak.

An angle on Raw at the end of 1996 put an end to that, and indeed to Goldust’s effectiveness as a character.

After the heel Bizarre One saved babyface Marc Mero from a beat down at the hands of Hunter Hearst Helmsley, he got into a heated discussion with Jerry Lawler, who had been hosting the previous segment before it got out of hand.

Lawler revealed that Triple H had made a pass at Goldust’s valet Marlena, which he said Goldie should be thankful for because Hunter was “a real man, if you know what I mean”.

What followed was one of the most awkward exchanges to take place on Raw:

Lawler: “I didn’t mean that you’re not a man.It’s just that you’re a, you’re a . . . aren’t you?”
Goldust: “A what?”
Lawler: “You know! Well aren’t you?”
Goldust: “What am I?”
Lawler: “Queer?”
Goldust: “No!”

Goldust got a big pop for “inning” himself, putting an exclamation point on his babyface turn by popping Lawler in the mouth.
