SummerSlam 1990
What was the main event? Ultimate Warrior vs. Rick Rude in a steel cage match
What was it going to be? Ultimate Warrior vs. Mr. Perfect
Why did it change? Although Warrior vs. Perfect was never officially on the docket, Perfect had been lined up as a potential challenger to Warrior in early 1990.
Perfect was set to win the Royal Rumble but plans changed for WWF Champion Hulk Hogan to win it instead (because that is what Hogan wanted), which did little to help anyone.
By the time Perfect lost to Hogan’s buddy Brutus Beefcake at WrestleMania VI and had done the job for Hogan repeatedly around the circuit, his credibility as a title contender was ruined.
Rude was placed into the role because he had past history with Warrior and was one of the very few men to ever defeat him in WWE.
