SummerSlam 1992
What was the main event? Bret Hart vs. The British Bulldog
What was it going to be? Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels in a ladder match
Why did it change? Before SummerSlam was confirmed for Wembley Stadium in London, England, Bret Hart’s Intercontinental Championship opponent was going to be Shawn Michaels in a ladder match.
Hart had met with McMahon and proposed the concept – which was a regular feature of Stampede Wrestling in the 80s – to give an extra dimension to his rivalry with Michaels.
Hart’s other proposal was to work with Bulldog if the show was in England, believing (rightly) that there would be huge interest in a show in the country with Davey Boy on top.
Vince went with London and the Bulldog match – which turned out to be one of the greatest in WWE history – then gave the ladder match to Shawn and Razor Ramon at WrestleMania X 18 months later.
