The WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship scene has arguably become stale, with the same handful of teams battling over and over.
Despite a roster filled with innovative women, NXT is rarely visited by the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions. This will change on Wednesday, as Shotzi Blackheart and Tegan Nox receive a championship match.
These titles returning to NXT refreshes the championship picture, while a platform is also provided for the ladies of NXT to reach new eyes.
Here are five NXT teams that should challenge for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships sooner rather than later.
5. Dakota Kai and Candice LeRae
Despite coming up short at NXT TakeOver: In Your House, Kai and LeRae’s aggression would be tough for any team to overcome.
One of the most talented performers in the world, Candice recently made a statement, turning on the fans. Arguably overshadowed by her husband in her early NXT career, LeRae now will do anything to climb the rankings.
Dakota was similarly overshadowed by Tegan Nox before her infamous actions at NXT TakeOver: WarGames. Since that day, Kai has become a brutal force in NXT’s women’s division. With the protection of Raquel González, Dakota is untouchable to anyone not prepared for a 2-on-1 ambush.
Kai and LeRae joining forces created a tandem hell-bent on brutalising opponents. Desperate to make their names feared, this duo wouldn’t let the Women’s Tag Team Champions leave Full Sail unscathed.
4. Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter
When the Human Spider Monkey teams with the Pretty Reckless one, they make magic!
After breaking down barriers on American Ninja Warrior, Kacy’s transition to the squared circle was as smooth as can be. Her unrivaled athleticism helped her become one of the most innovative competitors wrestling today.
Kayden took a different route to WWE. After training with The Dudley Boyz, Carter became a championship-tested independent performer before finally signing with NXT.
The two Mae Young Classic alumni have the potential to reach the highest heights in WWE. Fittingly calling themselves ‘Team Ninja’, this team would thrive in the championship picture, ‘wowing a completely new audience.
3. Aliyah and Vanessa Borne
Two of the longest-tenured women in NXT, this team would be eager for a new challenge.
Aliyah has almost become lost in the shuffle since NXT went live. The tag division is where she truly shines, with every Aliyah win this year coming from team encounters.
Her tandem with Vanessa Borne was the most dominant. These two ran through many Performance Center graduates as the NXT veterans climbed the totem pole.
One of the most established women’s teams in NXT, a championship match would be the opportunity they’ve been fighting for. Hungry to progress, Aliyah and Vanessa’s cunning style could prove problematic for the titleholders.
