10. John Cena & Nikki Bella vs. The Miz & Maryse – WrestleMania 33
Nothing special about this program happened during this match. The build to the match was entertaining and the post-match was eventful but this was a house show match at WrestleMania.
Precisely nothing interesting happened in the ten minutes this match took up. Cena and Bella would win the match with stereo finishers but the post-match overshadowed the match itself. Cena regaled the crowd with a touching story about his relationship with Nikki Bella before dropping to one knee and proposing. Bella said yes and it was a feel-good moment.
The fact that the couple split up before the wedding makes this feel a tiny bit less special though. Love is dead.
9. John Cena vs. Edge vs. The Big Show – WrestleMania XXV
This match had the dubious distinction of having to be the one to follow Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker. You know, maybe the best WrestleMania match ever.
To say the crowd was exhausted by the spectacle of the prior match would be an understatement. While people still cared about John Cena, fewer people cared about Edge and Big Show’s heel vs. heel feud. The three men had a largely forgettable threeway match with the only highlight coming when Cena managed to lift both Big Show and Edge onto his shoulders at the same time.
Cena would deliver Attitude Adjustments to both men and reclaim the World Heavyweight Championship but light the crowd on fire this match did not.
8. John Cena vs. Rusev – WrestleMania 31
The best way to describe this match is a perfectly fine pay per view encounter. It did not stand out on a fantastic WrestleMania and Cena defeated another upper mid-card heel.
The match peaked at the entrance when Rusev rode into WrestleMania atop a tank in one of the all-time best ‘Mania entrances. Cena and Rusev wrestled an above-average 15-minute match and there really is not much more to say about it. Some will find fault with Cena beating another up-and-coming star but he did less damage to Rusev than he had done in the past. While that is not a positive statement, it makes it easier to look past this match.
