On the December 26 edition of Friday Night SmackDown, Carmelo Hayes defeated Ilja Dragunov to win the United States Championship.

Now that he holds the gold, fans should see Hayes continue the tradition of the US Title Open Challenge.

With his first open challenge on the horizon, there are a plethora of options for potential stars who could step up to the plate for a shot at the title first.

8. Johnny Gargano

Following his huge victory over Ilja Dragunov to become the new WWE United States Champion, Carmelo Hayes cut a celebratory promo backstage.

However, this interview was interrupted when Johnny Gargano attacked Hayes and told him that he ruined everything.

Gargano is someone who challenged Dragunov for the gold during his reign and could do the same with Melo.

Gargano stepping up to be Hayes’ first challenger would be appropriate and properly follow up from this attack the week prior.
