This year’s Royal Rumble match produced some awesome moments, with Edge returning to the ring for the first time in nine years, Drew McIntrye eliminating Brock Lesnar before going on to win the whole match, and King Corbin throwing out Matt Riddle in less than a minute.
With SummerSlam in the books and just five months before next year’s Royal Rumble event, we decided to compile a list of the five people who we think could have a shot at winning the 2021 men’s Royal Rumble match.
If you think we’ve missed someone out that you’d like to see win the Royal Rumble match next January, then please let us know on Twitter.
5. Drew McIntyre
In the week’s leading up to the Royal Rumble earlier this year, many people speculated that Cain Velasquez would return to WWE as part of the match and eliminate Brock Lesnar, setting up a WrestleMania WWE Championship match with his long-time rival.
This meant that fans were incredibly happy when Drew McIntyre entered the match at #16 and Claymore kicked Brock Lesnar out of the ring, before going on to win the entire match by last eliminating Roman Reigns.
Drew had just turned babyface a few weeks prior, and the fans in attendance at the Minute Maid Park loudly cheered as he eliminated Reigns and won the Royal Rumble for the first time in his career. After years of being told Drew was the future, his time was finally now.
When Drew then progressed to WrestleMania to face Brock Lesnar, his crowning moment was dampened somewhat by the fact that no fans were in attendance for the show at the Performance Center due to the Coronavirus pandemic. What should have left like the pinnacle of Drew’s WWE career fell slightly flat due to the ongoing worldwide health crisis.
We are slowly seeing fans integrated back into shows with the ThunderDome, and if we are able to get fans into the stadium for next year’s WrestleMania, I’d like to see Drew McIntyre win the Royal Rumble again and get his crowning moment on the “grandest stage of them all” in front of 80,000 fans.
It has even been reported that WWE is considering putting the WWE Championship back on Randy Orton, and a babyface Drew McIntyre chasing the title, winning the Royal Rumble for the second year running and then reclaiming the belt at WrestleMania in front of fans could make for a rather compelling story.
4. The Fiend
Last month SummerSlam, The Fiend recaptured the Universal Championship he lost to Goldberg in Saudi Arabia back in February by defeating Braun Strowman in a Falls Count Anywhere match in the show’s main event.
The reign was incredibly short for The Fiend, with the returning Roman Reigns beating him and Braun Strowman in a three-way No Holds Barred match for the title at Payback just six days later.
With The Fiend reportedly set to be pushed as SmackDown’s top babyface, Wyatt could be an interesting pick to win the men’s Royal Rumble match next year.
A babyface Fiend winning the Royal Rumble match, going on to WrestleMania 37 to face a heel Roman Reigns (the match we were supposed to get the reverse of at this year’s show), could make for a very interesting several-month story.
You could even have all of Bray Wyatt’s characters (Cult Leader Bray, Firefly Fun House Bray and The Fiend) enter the match for a repeat of the awesome three faces of Foley spot from Royal Rumble 1998.
