2017 KickOff Show Match
In the first edition of ‘Flashback’, which covered last year’s Backlash, I didn’t focus on the pre-show, but I will this time.
Aren’t you lucky?
The Hype Bros. (Mojo Rawley and Zack Ryder) defeated The Colóns (Primo and Epico)
This was Zack Ryder’s first match back after about six months on the sideline, nursing a knee injury.
There was no real story going into this one, other than the Hype Bros. claiming they should have been number one contender’s for the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships, as they had won a tag team Battle Royal to earn that right before Ryder sustained his injury.
The match itself was pretty formulaic, with the Puerto Rican cousins working over the ‘Long Island Iced Z’, leading to a Rawley ‘hot tag’.
The Hype Bros. picked up the win with a Hype Ryder, with the ‘Ultimate Broski’ getting the pin.
In the following weeks, Ryder and Rawley convinced then-SmackDown General Manager, Daniel Bryan, to put them in contention for the SmackDown Tag Titles. Bryan said that if they could defeat then-champions the Usos in a non-title match, they would get their championship opportunity. The Usos won the non-title match, and the Hype Bros. never got their shot at gold.
This year, none of the four men are scheduled to be a part of the Money in the Bank event, and the pre-show match is set to be the Bludgeon Brothers defending their WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships against Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows.
