# G1 Climax A Block FINAL RESULTS – Another 5 Star Match!

![](https://staging.wrestletalk.com/app/uploads/2018/08/g1-a-block.png)

On August 10, **New Japan** held the A Block Final of the **G1 Climax** from the world-famous *Nippon Budokan*. This was a massive show, so of course…

#### \*\*\*PREPARE FOR SPOILERS\*\*\*

## **Togi Makabe vs. Michael Elgin**

Togi Makabe pinned Michael Elgin in a fairly uninspired hoss match. This entire tournament, Makabe has seemed like he’s been filling up space while not contributing in a meaningful fashion. Elgin, meanwhile, started off hot with great matches against EVIL and Hangman Page, but an injury to his right bicep hindered him in the second half of the tournament.

Despite being two charismatic powerhouses, Elgin and Makabe didn’t really have much sizzle. They just did the expected power moves and strike exchanges, and then eventually, Makabe just got bored and hit the King Kong knee drop for the victory.

Makabe and Elgin both finish the tournament with six points. While Elgin started off hot, it’s fair to say neither had an ideal **G1**.

## **Yoshi-Hashi vs. Hangman Page**

Yoshi-Hashi pinned Hangman Page in what turned out to be a very fun final match for the two. Both men had a tournament where they had great matches, but couldn’t get meaningful victories. Of course, with Page, he’s a young-up-and-comer, so commentary was much more forgiving and optimistic, whereas with Yoshi, they practically buried him on every show.

Regardless, both men fought like they had something to prove. Everytime Page tried to hit Rite of Passage to end the match, Yoshi had a counter, at one point breaking out a Canadian Destroyer to the shock of everyone. It makes you wanna see Yoshi-Hashi go on excursion to Impact and feud with Petey Williams. Screw the Young Bucks and Jericho to Impact speculation, I wanna see the battle of Canadian Destroyers.

Anyway, Page tried for Rites of Passage one more time, but YH was able to reverse it into Karma for the victory.

Both men end their tournament with six points. Obviously, Page is going to be a **G1** regular given his youth and talent. There’s been a lot of talk about Yoshi-Hashi being on the chopping block, but frankly, he’s worked too hard and had too many good matches this **G1** to deserve that. With how nothing Makabe’s been and how awful the Tongans are, there’re way better options if you wanna cull the herd for next year’s blocks.

## **Minoru Suzuki vs. Bad Luck Fale**

Minoru Suzuki defeated Bad Luck Fale via DQ because there is no God, life is meaningless, and your parents are getting a divorce.

I’ll give this match some credit: the crowd were super into Suzuki killing Fale with a chair. The Tongans have such go-away heat, that even a sadistic super-heel like Suzuki gets a mega face reaction just by assaulting Fale with a chair. The two had a mostly uninteresting brawl inside and outside the ring. Since this was Bullet Club vs. Suzuki-gun, both sides were doing a lot of distractions and shenanigans.

It would be the Bullet Club who got the upper hand though, as Tama Tonga ran in and hit a Gun Stun on Suzuki for the shmoz.

I hope you enjoy throwing things at your television, because this is going to happen tomorrow with Omega and Ibushi. Don’t think it won’t. The Tongans are gonna run in and ruin the match like five minutes in. It’s gonna happen, and we’re all gonna hate it. Gedo laughs at your pain.

Suzuki finishes the tournament with 10 points. Fale finishes with six, and has become the first person in **G1** history to go through 20-man group stages without getting pinned or being made to tap. Thank God for DQs, I suppose.

## EVIL vs. Jay White

EVIL pinned Jay White in a good match that, honestly, was missing something. Probably drama. After all, were Jay to win this match, then Okada would be out of the tournament. So basically, it was a foregone conclusion that EVIL was gonna come out of this the spoiler

Nevertheless, this managed to be a good match, with White trying to use every cheating trick in the book he’s used throughout the tournament, with EVIL managing to steamroller over him. While some have been underwhelmed by EVIL’s overall tournament, with his matches against White, Elgin, Tanahashi, and Okada, he was honestly one of the more outstanding members of a pretty lackluster A Block.

EVIL finishes his tournament with 10 points. White ends his first **G1** with 12 points, wins over some of the top stars in the promotion, and a new level of overness as a heel. I’d say he came out pretty good.

## **Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada**

Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kazuchika Okada wrestled to a 30-minute time-limit draw in an intense and emotional encounter. Once again, Tanahashi and Okada delivered another classic, beautifully playing on the drama of the ticking clock, and utilizing the philosophy of ‘less is more’ to the fullest.

There were no dangerous spots, nothing incredibly stiff, and no bleeding from the mouth, but this was still so enthralling from beginning to end. That’s what happens when you have such a storied rivalry with huge stakes and an audience that is invested in everything.

The story here was brilliant. The only way for Tanahashi to win was to not lose. He can’t beat Okada anymore, certainly not in under 30 minutes. But at the same time, it takes Okada way longer than 30 minutes to beat Tanahashi. This match was a war as Tanahashi controlled the pace and worked the limbs, making sure Okada couldn’t take control and use the Rainmaker.

Despite Tanahashi’s efforts though, Okada is still Okada, and at some points, you thought it was all over. The stretches where Okada keeps trying to hit the Rainmaker, but Tanahashi manages a counter are some of the most stressful periods I’ve had watching wrestling all year. Ultimately, Tanahashi slapped Okada with defiance, forcing him on his stomach. The ‘Ace’ hit High Fly Flow and let the clock run out, giving him the overall point advantage.

Thus, Tanahashi wins the A Block with 15 points, advancing to his first **G1** Final in three years. Okada, meanwhile, finishes with 13, and is ostensibly out of the **Wrestle Kingdom** main event now that he has neither the world title nor the **G1**.

Tanahashi’s opponent for the final will be determined on August 11, again from the *Budokan*. The two matches of interest are Naito vs. Zack Sabre Jr, and Omega vs. Ibushi. If Naito wins his match, and Omega and Ibushi wrestle to a draw, he goes into the final. If Omega wins, he’s in. And if Naito loses to Zack, and Ibushi beats Kenny, he goes into the final.
