7. Joey Janela
Joey Janela is similar to Jimmy Javoc in the sense that he has been a featured performer without an awful lot of direction. He has been through feuds with Kip Sabien and Jon Moxley but his position in the promotion has not changed. This could be changed if Janela becomes TNT Champion.
The only issue with a few of these entries is the title itself will need to be elevated at first. Given we know nothing about this title besides Cody not wanting it to be known as a mid-card title, they will likely want a big star to hold it first to get it over by association. Janela may not be that guy but his charisma could increase his odds.
6. Sammy Guevara
Sammy Guevara is a perfect candidate to hold a title like this. He is not quite a main event star but he is very close to it. He is the best douchey heel in the business and he could do wonders with having a title. That isn’t even taking his wrestling ability into account.
Guevara is a character who should be a champion. Having a belt to work with as a prop would allow him to do tons of creative things and he is talented enough to have fantastic matches as the champion.
5. Dustin Rhodes
As the TNT Championship seems to be AEW’s version of a TV Championship, who better to be the first champion than the man with the most connection to WCW? Dustin Rhodes could be a great candidate for a first champion and as he likely won’t ever get a run as AEW World Champion, winning this title could be a great moment for the veteran.
If AEW is looking to have a heartwarming moment in their tournament final, having Rhodes win could do just the trick.
4. Darby Allin
Very similar to Sammy Guevara, Darby Allin would be a fantastic up-and-coming candidate to be the first TNT Champion. He is getting over huge as an underdog babyface and continues to connect with the audience on a weekly basis.
While the title wouldn’t be used as a prop as much as it would be with someone like Guevara, Allin could stake his claim on the title and make it feel important through emotional matches. Imagine seeing someone like him defending the TNT Championship on a regular basis, getting beat up more and more each time only to continue to fight through the pain. Sign me up for that.
