The 10 Best AEW Matches Of 2021

7. The Young Bucks vs. PAC & Rey Fenix – AEW Dynamite (April 14, 2021)

There goes those Young Bucks again!

On the April 7th episode of Dynamite, Matt and Nick Jackson turned heel by betraying Jon Moxley and reuniting with AEW World Champion Kenny Omega.

The following week, they defended their AEW World Tag Team Titles against PAC and Rey Fenix.

The Death Triangle members earned the opportunity by winning the Casino Tag Team Battle Royale at Revolution 2021.

This bout was breathtaking in many ways. Whenever Rey Fenix mixes it up with the Young Bucks, the output is usually extraordinary.

However, the addition of PAC gave this a different feel from the usual Young Bucks vs. Lucha Bros battles.

The Bastard brought plenty of intensity and another gear to his impeccable speed. The Young Bucks were simply the biggest jerks in this contest.

Matt and Nick were in their famed Dior gear and were another level of smug here. In the end, Nick gave PAC a low blow and then removed Fenix’s mask.

With the luchador hiding his face, the Young Bucks delivered a double superkick to retain the AEW World Tag Team Titles.

6. Kenny Omega vs. Rey Fenix – AEW Dynamite: New Year’s Smash Night 1

Kenny Omega came into 2021 as the AEW World Champion and kicked off the year with his first title defense.

Rey Fenix was injured and then pulled from the AEW World Title Eliminator Tournament that Omega won to get his shot at the gold.

Tony Khan gave him the first opportunity at the Cleaner to make good on this.

Omega and Fenix have met twice before in NEW and AAA, but this first AEW clash was tremendous.

Rey Fenix is often considered a tag team specialist for his contributions alongside his brother Penta El Zero Miedo.

However, this main event proved that he has all the makings to be a top star for All Elite Wrestling.

The sequences were spectacular with Omega connecting with the V-Trigger, only for Fenix to kip back up with a superkick being the best.

The Best Bout Machine defeated Fenix with the One-Winged Angel to retain the title.

5. Hangman Page vs. Bryan Danielson – AEW Dynamite: Winter Is Coming 2021

The latest entry of all these terrific matchups came last week on AEW Dynamite’s Winter Is Coming 2021 special.

After finally overcoming his insecurities and beating Kenny Omega for the AEW World Championship, Hangman Adam Page looked to kick off his reign with a showdown against the Number One Contender, Bryan Danielson.

This was a different Danielson than what was presented before Full Gear 2021. The American Dragon was disappointed that Omega wasn’t the champion and felt Page was beneath him.

He added to this disrespect by picking apart Hangman’s friends in the Dark Order in the weeks leading to Winter Is Coming.

The fans weren’t expecting the bout that took place on this night. For 60 minutes, Hangman Page and Bryan Danielson put on an excellent encounter that never felt like it was an hour.

The pacing was splendid and allowed for the Dallas crowd to go on the ride with them.

Page hit the Buckshot Lariat with seconds remaining and couldn’t get the fall before time expired.

This was a modern-day television classic. It has been ages since fans saw on an hour Broadway on national television, so Page and Danielson created such a unique viewing experience.

4. Kenny Omega vs. Hangman Page – AEW Full Gear 2021

Despite Hangman’s first defense being an all-timer, it just didn’t hit the highs of his triumphant coronation.

From day one of AEW, Hangman Adam Page said that he would become the AEW World Champion. He suffered failure and setbacks that tested his confidence in himself.

Page found success with Kenny Omega by his side as AEW World Tag Team Champions, but his anxiety led to their loss against FTR at All Out 2020 and Omega leaving him behind.

After one year after Omega beat Page to win the AEW World Title Eliminator and went on to win the gold, Hangman was his challenger and put on the performance of a lifetime.

Hangman Page held nothing back, but Kenny Omega was in top form. Although he was knackered by injuries, the Cleaner brought everything that fans expect from him with precise strikes and crisp offense.

This AEW Full Gear 2021 main event was simply outstanding and had some brilliant twists like Page hitting the One-Winged Angel on Omega for a nearfall instead of what fans expected.

The Young Bucks came down to the ring and gave a nod of approval to Hangman before he hit two Buckshot Lariats to defeat Kenny Omega and win the AEW World Championship.

This felt like a worthy destination to a wonderful journey.
