Bobby Heenan once joked that Undertaker was starting a basketball team for guys, “six feet and under.” The grave-related pun was a throwaway gag, but the truth is that Mark Calaway did in fact have a background in the game of hoops.
Calaway wasn’t the only tall wrestler to give basketball a go – Kevin Nash and Big Show both had prospective careers running the parquet floors. In Calaway’s case, he enrolled in Fort Worth’s Texas Wesleyan University in 1985, playing the position of center for their Rams’ basketball program. Naturally right-handed, Calaway reportedly developed an effective left-handed shot after breaking a finger on his right. But Calaway coveted professional wrestling more, and spurned an opportunity to play professional basketball in Europe in order to pursue the squared circle dream.
