This Day In Wrestling History – September 22

1980: Seven years before their WrestleMania III clash, Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan met in the main event of the WWF’s Madison Square Garden show. As this was in the days before Hulkamania, it was Hogan who did the job, losing via pinfall.

1984: In front of a packed MSG, WWF Champion Hulk Hogan lost to Big John Studd via count out, B. Brian Blair defeated Iron Mike Sharpe via DQ and Kamala pinned Pat Patterson in the main event.

1986: The WWF’s Madison Square Garden show was headlined by a wacky six-man tag bout, in which Hulk Hogan teamed with Super Machine and Big Machine to beat Big John Studd, Bobby Heenan and King Kong Bundy. The standout match of a weak show was The Fabulous Rougeaus’ win over The Hart Foundation.

1996: Shawn Michaels and Mankind met for the only time on pay-per-view in the superb main event of WWF In Your House: Mind Games. The match was unlike anything else in the WWF at the time and ranks amongst the best of Mick Foley’s career.

1997: The WWF held Raw at Madison Square Garden for the first time and delivered one of their all-time great broadcasts. The most memorable moment was Steve Austin drilling Vince McMahon with a Stunner for the first time, to a mighty roar of approval from the New York crowd. The event also marked the WWF debut of Mick Foley’s Cactus Jack persona. The madman defeated Triple H in a scorching street fight.

2000: On a WCW house show, Terry Funk defeated Lance Storm to win the WCW US Title in his hometown of Amarillo, Texas. Elsewhere on the card, Sting beat old rival The Great Muta, Booker T dropped DDP and Shane Douglas pinned Billy Kidman.

2002: Presenting non-finishes in pay-per-view main events is not a new practice for WWE. At Unforgiven they pulled the same stunt as WWE Champion Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker went to a double DQ. Also on the show, Triple H senselessly beat Rob Van Dam to kill his momentum, Trish Stratus beat Molly Holly to win the Women’s title, Chris Jericho defeated Ric Flair, Eddie Guerrero downed Edge and Chris Benoit pinned Kurt Angle.

2003: Five years after their rivalry was relevant, Goldberg pinned Chris Jericho in the Raw main event. The two famously had a mini program in WCW which was nixed because Goldberg “did not do comedy”, which led to years of bad blood between them.

2004: The Big Bossman passed away at the age of 41 from heart failure.

2008: Chris Jericho, JBL and Lance Cade defeated Batista and Shawn Michaels in the main event of Raw.

2010: Giant Gonzalez passed away at the age of 44 due to complications from diabetes.

2014: John Cena and Randy Orton met for the millionth time in the main event of Raw, which Cena won via DQ. Also on the show, AJ Lee beat Nikki Bella via submission, Adam Rose and The Bunny beat Heath Slater and Titus O’Neil and Dolph Ziggler pinned The Miz to win the IC title.

2016: Kenny Omega beat YOSHI-HASHI in the headliner of NJPW Destruction In Hiroshima. It was the best match of a distinctly average card.

2017: Cody successfully defended the ROH World Title against Minoru Suzuki in the main event of ROH Death Before Dishonor. Match of the night honors went to the semi-final in which Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin defeated The Young Bucks to win the ROH tag belts.
