Top 5 New Japan Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Tag Teams

2. Tencozy (Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima)

Hiroyoshi Tenzan has been known to succeed in many tag team combinations. He currently holds the record for most individual reigns by an individual with 12 reigns as tag champion. However, one of his most famous team was with Satoshi Kojima as part of Tencozy. The duo first started teaming together back in 1998 when Tenzan’s partner Masahiro Chono was injured.

From the minute started teaming together, it was magic.

They managed to win their first IWGP tag titles in 1999 on their first attempt defeating Genichiro Tenyru and Shiro Koshinika. Since then, Tencozy has had six different IWGP Heavyweight Tag Championship reign with their last run in 2017. They have also had 11 successful defences during reigns lasting a combined 929 days. They are also the only team to have won both the G1 Tag League and All Japan’s World’s Strongest Tag Determination League.

Even with the influx of new talent from across the world, TenCozy still creates magic whenever they are in the ring together. Both came from the New Japan Dojo system and, even with their ups and downs, have managed to continue fighting at a high level. It is this determination that still makes them a formidable duo to this day.

1. Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa)

When anybody mentions tag team wrestling, it is a given that the Bullet Club’s Guerrillas of Destiny (G.O.D) are in the conversation. Named by many as one of the best tag teams in the world, brothers Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa have made a huge impact on New Japan’s Heavyweight tag division.

The duo started teaming together in 2008 under the name Sons of Haku during the early years of their career. However, it was not until seven years later in 2016 when Tanga Loa joined New Japan as the newest Bullet Club member that the team started making waves.

Tama and Tanga won their first titles in April 2016 beating Tomoaki Honma and Togi Makabe (Great Bash Heel) a few weeks after making their tag team debut. From there, they went on to win the title six times lasting a combined 607 days. They are also former three-time NEVER Openweight 6-Man Champions and Ring of Honor World Tag Team Champions.

By being brothers, their in-ring chemistry is second to none and unlike any other team on this list. With Tanga Loa’s speed and Tama Tonga’s athleticism, the duo perfectly complements each other creating the perfect tag team. Also, G.O.D is still very early in their career and will only grow and win more titles in the upcoming years.
