An updated look at the match card for WWE WrestleMania 39 on April 1 & 2, following Elimination Chamber and the February 20 episode of Raw.
We’re closer to figuring out what the card for the biggest show of the year looks like, so let’s take a look…
Roman Reigns/Sami Zayn/Cody Rhodes WrestleMania 39 Update
Let’s start with the big one as the big chance for a twist has come and gone.
Unless – and there is still time for it – anything changes, it will indeed be Roman Reigns defending the Undisputed Universal Championship against Cody Rhodes, with no Sami Zayn involved.
Where that leaves Zayn still isn’t 100% clear, because Owens, who seemed to save him from the Bloodline at the end of Elimination Chamber but then walked out without hugging Zayn, told him on Raw that he didn’t do it for Zayn, he did it for himself, and he’s still mad at Zayn for going along with the Bloodline for so long.
Jey Uso also seemed to save Zayn from Reigns at Chamber, but Zayn accidentally speared him.
There’s still 11 shows including both Raw and SmackDown, which is PLENTY of time to get things on track for Zayn and Owens challenging for the Usos’ tag team championships which is what everyone expects.
Other WrestleMania 39 Matches
From one Rumble winner in Cody Rhodes to the other, nothing has changed with regards to Rhea Ripley challenging Charlotte Flair for the SmackDown Women’s Championship, so that’s still on.
However, on Raw, Ripley and Dominik Mysterio said they’ll both be at the February 24 SmackDown since Ripley has a face-off scheduled with Flair.
However, Dominik going there too and threatening to get involved in his father Rey Mysterio’s match with Karrion Kross, looks like it’ll be where we essentially get confirmation of Dominik vs Rey for WrestleMania too.
Paul Levesque (Triple H) made a smart decision back in October when he moved Rey to SmackDown to keep them apart because there was no way they could be on the same brand without having a match all the way until WrestleMania, but it’s been clear since last year that Rey vs Dominik has been the direction.
For the other women’s title, we got the expected winner at Elimination Chamber in Asuka, so she’ll challenge Bianca Belair for the Raw Women’s Championship at WrestleMania.
The women’s Elimination Chamber was the first on the show, and that was followed by Brock Lesnar vs Bobby Lashley.
Heading into that, it seemed like we’d probably get a screwy finish and a rematch at WrestleMania, but a spanner was thrown into the works just one day earlier when Bray Wyatt basically called out the winner.
Well, we got the screwy finish anyway – so we were back on track for a rematch, or potentially a three-way.
Well… on Raw, MVP appeared and challenged Lesnar to WrestleMania match, not on behalf of himself, not on behalf of Lashley, but on behalf of… Omos.
Very rarely is something teased like that and not followed up on, BUT, I won’t believe Lesnar vs Omos is happening until it’s official – and there’s a segment announced for February 27 to supposedly make it so.
At this point, I’m erring on the side of that being swerve and a setup for something else, probably Lashley again.
Switching gears to something that we’ve pretty much known since Royal Rumble but was reiterated at Elimination Chamber, Seth Rollins is set for a Mania match against Logan Paul, as Paul attacked Rollins which allowed Austin Theory to beat him and retain the United States Championship.
Speaking of Theory, after his aforementioned retention in the Chamber, he then defended the US Title against Edge on Raw.
The direction is absolutely Theory vs John Cena, as expected, and Cena returns on March 6 which is where that should be made official.
Theory retaining against Edge means his match with Cena will likely be for the United States Title too – there’s still time for him to lose it but it’d be unlikely.
The very reason Theory retained was because of Finn Balor, which also looks to confirm a Balor vs Edge match for Mania as well – likely with a stipulation.
We’d known Theory vs Cena was planned for a while via leaked reports, and another plan that had leaked was Dakota Kai & IYO SKY of Damage CTRL defending the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship against Ronda Rousey & Shayna Baszler.
It had been reported that the plan was for Kai, SKY and Bayley vs Becky Lynch, Trish Stratus and Lita in a six-woman tag at Elimination Chamber, but an injury to Kai seemingly threw that off so it’s a bit unclear right now.
On Raw, Lynch interrupted a Damage CTRL promo and she wanted the tag title, and then she brought out Lita – and they specifically said they want to challenge for the tag title next week, meaning Damage CTRL could retain and we’d still get the match with them defending against Rousey and Baszler.
That does still leave Bayley and Lynch in an uncertain situation – personally I would have made the Raw Women’s Title match a four-way with them, Belair and Asuka, but that would mean not really living up to the stipulation of Asuka winning the Chamber.
Perhaps it’ll just be another run of Bayley vs Lynch, but it feels like the cage match should have been the end of that.
There’s also the fact Trish Stratus was supposed to return as part of that Raw segment and didn’t, so she may play into things somewhere down the line.
There still hasn’t actually been any movement in this direction, but the reported GUNTHER vs Drew McIntyre vs Sheamus three-way for GUNTHER’s Intercontinental Title could very well still be on since there’s no other direction set up for any of them.
Also, I still think LA Knight should host the show and I will continue saying this until it happens.
The only other thing that popped into my head for Knight would be a match against Pat McAfee, but there hasn’t been anything to suggest McAfee’s even available other than him calling the Royal Rumble at the end of January – he’s not been seen since then.
