Why Becky Lynch Shouldn’t Turn Babyface

A Heel Becky Lynch Makes Sense

Unlike some bizarre heel turns in recent memory, Becky Lynch turned on Charlotte out of genuine progression as a character. For weeks we followed “Becky Balboa” as she struggled to make an opportunity for herself in the SmackDown women’s division. She fought through the undercard, earned her title shot, and took it – only for the wildcard of Charlotte Flair to be thrown in at the last minute. Of course, as Becky’s months of work were about to pay off at SummerSlam, Charlotte crept into the ring and made herself SmackDown Women’s Champion.

It’s perfectly reasonable, justified, and expected for someone blindsided by a friend to react the way Becky did. We saw her put in the work, and saw her prize taken away at the last moment by the woman who was, at the time, her best friend. As a character, Becky’s turn taps into something universal:

“For the most part, people are generally good and want to do the right thing. And sometimes, it just backfires on you. My dad used to always tell me no good deed goes unpunished. And I think that’s what you’re seeing with Becky right now, that she’s always done the right thing and it hasn’t gotten her where she wants it. And now she’s had enough and she’s saying ‘I don’t care who’s in my way.’”

When Jim Ross compared her to Stone Cold Steve Austin, she responded similarly:

“It was impossible to not want to cheer that guy because he was doing what we all wanted to do. None of us want to take crap from anybody and I think that’s the same thing Becky Lynch is doing right now too. That’s the highest honor you could possibly be given.”

Undoubtedly this run has taken things quite a lot farther than one would expect from a babyface. But Becky’s relentless attitude as SmackDown Women’s Champion fits in perfectly with the “Becky Balboa” we’ve known. And the results have had an impact far beyond Becky’s core group of die-hard fans…
