WrestleTalk News Round-up – September 28, 2018

Hello and welcome to the September 28, 2018 edition of the WrestleTalk news round-up! You know the drill by now, we’re gonna take a look at some of the smaller stories from today and pack them into an easy-to-consume feast for your pleasure.

Carmella on intergender wrestling and R-Truth

Former WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion Carmella has formed a friendship with R-Truth in recent weeks. The pair have been positioned as fun babyfaces and have quickly become a fan-favorite duo.

The pair have not only impressed on SmackDown, but are also teammates in season two of the Mixed Match Challenge, where they are known as the Fabulous Truth. How did they come up with such a great name?

In a recent interview with TV Insider, ‘Mella gave her thoughts on intergender wrestling:

“The other night Truth had a match with Andrade [Almas], and Zelina [Vega] was out there. I pulled her off the apron, and the crowd went nuts. I think when there is this intergender concept happening, it’s different. You don’t know what is happening or what to expect; where if it’s just a women’s match you know they are going to fight. But when there are men and women involved, you just don’t know. I think it’s unexpected.”

The ‘Princess of Staten Island’ also discussed her relationship with MMC partner R-Truth:

“It’s only been a few weeks, so it’s crazy it has turned into this. That’s the same thing with Big E and New Day. I didn’t really know them until we were paired together for the Mixed Match Challenge. We just had this instant connection and great chemistry. It was just fun. I’m game to make a fool of myself. I don’t care. I’m game to have a good time and play a character and know my role. Whether it was being a manager for Enzo and Big Cass in NXT and then with James Ellsworth and now with R-Truth. It’s cool to show different sides of myself and my character. I feel like not that many people get to do that. They sort of stay the same their entire career, but I totally am open to all aspects of Carmella.”

IMPACT Wrestling viewership drops again

Last week’s episode of IMPACT Wrestling clocked in at 229,000 viewers, up against stiff competition, in particular from the NFL.

Unfortunately, this week marks another decrease, down 7,000 to 222,000 viewers.

If you’re one of those people not watching IMPACT because of the negative stigma surrounding it, start watching it. Please. It’s dead good.

WWE promotes PROGRESS Hello Wembley

PROGRESS Hello Wembley takes place this coming Sunday, and, believe me, it is packed with some stellar match-ups.

Tyler Bate vs. WALTER. Pete Dunne vs. Ilja Dragunov. Matt Riddle vs. Mark Haskins. Just to name three.

One thing you’ll notice about these particular three bouts, is that they all feature a member of the WWE NXT roster. Bate and Dunne have been with WWE since the inaugural WWE United Kingdom Tournament in 2016. Riddle, on the other hand, made his live event debut just a few days ago, and is yet to appear on TV.

Hello Wembley is one of the biggest British wrestling shows to date, and even WWE themselves promoted it on their website:

British Strong Style will be in full effect this weekend at PROGRESS Wrestling’s Hello Wembley event in London, where WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate and Trent Seven are set to compete in separate matches for what is already being dubbed the biggest independent wrestling show in U.K. history. Also highlighting the huge night are 2018 Mae Young Classic competitor (and 2017 semifinalist) Toni Storm, 205 Live’s Mark Andrews and NXT’s newest signee, Matt Riddle.

Taking place at the SSE Arena, Wembley on Sunday, Sept. 30, Hello Wembley will see Moustache Mountain’s Bate take on WALTER for the PROGRESS World Championship. Bate’s comrade Seven, meanwhile, will compete for thePROGRESS Atlas Championship against Doug Williams, while Storm battles for the PROGRESS Women’s Championship. The BruiserWeight is set to face fast-rising indie sensation Ilja Dragunov, and Riddle will fight in his final independent match. Tickets for the big event, which is limited to attendees 14 years and older, can be found here.

Tickets for what is sure to be an amazing show are available here. For more info on the event, and general great wrestling, check out the official PROGRESS website.

WWE Power Rankings

So I just found out that the WWE Power Rankings still exist, and they come out on Instagram each Friday.

Here’re this week’s:

The Bar make the cut after Sheamus defeated Big E in singles action this past Tuesday on SmackDown Live, following up Cesaro’s win over Kofi Kingston last week. I guess they’re not winning at Super Show-Down then.

Samoa Joe makes number four by… erm… breaking into a fellow wrestler’s house on live TV. Good of WWE to condone perfectly acceptable behavior like that.

Ziggler and McIntyre come in at third after retaining their Raw Tag Titles in a fantastic match against the Revival on Monday. Even Vince liked it. Vince liked a Revival match. Finally.

Becky Lynch comes in at second after… beating Lana. Questionable.

And the Shield make the top spot by defeating Baron Corbin and AoP in the main event of Raw, and overcoming the adversity thrown their way in Strowman, Ziggler and McIntyre trying to come between them and cause friction in the group.
