Little gameplay improvements that go a long way
2K and Yuke’s haven’t exactly reinvented the wheel when it comes to the gameplay systems for this year, but they do seem to have put a considerable amount more effort in taking in to account how short the development cycle is. Whilst still a far cry from the arcade style WWE games of old, 2K19 introduces a good number of positive little tweaks for a far more enjoyable experience overall. Take the payback mechanic for instance – whilst named after an often unremarkable pay-per-view, it adds a feature not completely dissimilar to the Ultra gauge in Street Fighter IV. That is, as you take more and more punishment throughout the match, you can reverse in to a special action rather than just a standard strike or grapple.
There’s also good amount of new gameplay modes and features. Showcase mode returns this year, focusing this time on Daniel Bryan, and MyCareer actually has some sort of story to it. It’s definitely also worth mentioning that 2K19 seems to be the most up to date installment in recent memory, with the correct, current theme music for the majority of the roster. There’s only a couple of recent changes missing, like Corbin’s new look and the B-Team’s second entrance theme.
