WWE 2K20 MyCareer: 5 Positives & 5 Negatives

WWE 2K20 MyCareer: 5 Positives & 5 Negatives

*This article will contain spoilers for WWE 2K20 MyCareer mode, so if you plan on playing it and don’t want to be spoiled, don’t read on!*

WWE 2K20 is the latest instalment in 2K’s wrestling video game series. However, it launched with extreme criticism.

And so it should have, as the game is clearly infested with glitches and mishaps. Hopefully, patches can fix most of those errors…

The MyCareer mode for this year’s adaptation can be seen as one of the best bits of the game. Minus the glitches and crashes, this story was actually quite fun at times!

It does have its lows though and this is the reason why we are covering both the positives and the negatives on this mode.

Positive 1. Interesting Story

MyCareer is a mode in 2K’s wrestling games wherein you create a character and go on a journey through their WWE career, winning titles everywhere you go.

The latest addition to this though has reduced creative freedom and put you on a set storyline. Last year, we had an entertaining story which grew our love for our MyPlayer.

This year has tried its hardest and I would say the story is actually quite interesting.

Red and Tre – the female and male MyPlayers respectively – embark on their wrestling journey, having to overcome obstacles to reach the “big leagues” of WWE.

They follow a list they created in High School, which keeps them on the track to stardom.

Red’s biggest hurdle is her High School bully Brooklyn Von Braun, who tries to make her life and career a misery.

Tre, on the other hand, is in search of his real parents while maintaining success in his career.

The story is told through Red and Tre reminiscing over their careers during a Hall of Fame speech.

Overall, the story is cheesy at times, but does have really interesting fantasy booking! Samoa Joe has a bionic arm, for goodness’ sake!

Negative 1. It Is Cringeworthy

This is a big negative with the MyCareer this year.

I remember playing WWE 2K19 and thinking Buzz was such a badass, having to overcome betrayals and show why he belongs, which he 100% did!

However, Tre has some of the cheesiest of lines. It is like he is a child.

It really decreases your enjoyment in the story, as why should you care about these chumps?

Red and Tre are always picked on and insulted, which should make us sympathise for them, but due to the cringe, we don’t feel that emotional connection with them.

Positive 2. Unique

The creators of this MyCareer certainly have an imagination as this story was very unique, fresh and fascinating!

They had brand new arenas, like one set in Hell, and WrestleMania 2029! They had a wrestler who was dressed as a rib!

The skill tree was also unique and easier to upgrade this year.

The goofiness may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but you can’t argue this was an original storyline.

Negative 2. Tre

The male MyPlayer is called ‘Tre’ because he slipped on a cafeteria tray in High School. Instantly, the super-cool character you were planning on creating became a fool.

I am pleased they finally brought a female MyPlayer into the story, but it didn’t have to ruin the male character. Both of them could have been cool together!

Tre is cheesy, annoying and hopeless. Does he even know wrestling is predetermined?! A better character portrayal to show everyone playing that being a WWE Superstar is an awesome thing to be would’ve been expected.

Positive 3. Red

Red was the opposite of Tre. She was an incredible character. She was up for any challenge and was climbing that ladder quickly.

She won the Mae Young Classic, NXT Women’s Championship, Raw Women’s Championship and SmackDown Women’s Championship. She held the former for the longest title reign in the modern era!

Excluding the part where she hid the secret about Tre’s parents, Red is a great MyPlayer.

Negative 3. Tre’s Real Parents

This subplot was really uncomfortable to watch. Even more than the Lashley-Lana-Rusev stuff.

Tre left his adopted parents’ expectations behind to train to be a wrestler. Even blocking any contact with them. Honestly, he never answered any of their text messages back…

This was because he got a letter from his biological parents. He left tickets for every show, keeping faith that he would wrestle in front of them one day.

We all knew Red was lying about his real parents though. She found out they passed away and wrote a letter to stop him from finding out. That is probably one of the cruellest things you can do to your so-called “best friend.”

It all exploded at the Hall of Fame when Brooklyn Von Braun came out with the truth. This also makes Red look like a coward – she couldn’t tell him the truth herself?

I understand it was done to conclude the story with the approval of his adopted parents, but it was a disgusting way to lead to it.

Positive 4. Becky Lynch And Her Savages

During Red’s admirable reign as SmackDown Women’s Champion, she was running out of challengers. This led to Becky Lynch answering her, but she wasn’t alone.

She was part of the League of Nations ‘Brexit edition’, with her British-led faction consisting of herself, Sheamus, Finn Bálor, Drew McIntyre and Pete Dunne!

The stable was called the Savages and they were a crucial part in the MyCareer story.

Red, Tre and the New Day faced the Savages in five sets of single matches, taking place at a New Day themed arena. Whichever team had the most points won the SmackDown Women’s title.

I really just want more factions in the real-life WWE.

Negative 4. The Loading Screens

This feature isn’t supposed to focus on the full game problems and only MyCareer, but the loading screens were so irritating while playing this mode.

Loading screens after each cutscene, after each match, just moving from one cutscene to the next. Going into the skill tree. There must have been more loading screens than matches in the mode…

The generation of games coming out nowadays have zero-to-no loading screens and they are usually really quick.

This makes WWE 2K20 look really outdated. It is quite sad, to be honest.

Negative 5. Is It Kayfabe?

I wanted to end on a high note, so let’s discuss the final negative talking point first.

Does 2K want the characters in MyCareer to know wrestling is predetermined and booked in advance, or is it supposed to be real life?

Tre is the biggest example of this. He handcuffed himself in the ring because he wanted to appear on the show more, and this would have got him backstage heat if it happened in reality.

He also just demanded for a Universal Championship match with Samoa Joe, when he wasn’t even on Raw and ended up winning with a fluke roll-up, which still haunts Joe, virtually.

This wouldn’t happen in real life. 2K needs to decide for future MyCareers whether the show is being produced like in real life, or if wrestling is a shoot in this universe.

Positive 5. Brooklyn Von Braun

Brooklyn Von Braun was one of the most impressive things about this year’s MyCareer Mode.

We loved to hate her.

Brooklyn Von Braun is the main antagonist of the mode and is Red and Tre’s High School bully. She went onto become an MMA star and Hollywood actress before joining WWE to annoy the MyPlayers.

She wanted to make Red’s life hell. She became SmackDown General Manager, teamed with Tre in the Mixed Match Challenge and brought back Samoa Joe.

She blackmailed Red stating that she will tell Tre the truth about his real parents unless Red retires from her dreams.

Then at the Hall of Fame would tell Tre anyways.

She may be one of the evilest characters of all time, not just in a WWE 2K game.

This game is definitely a lowlight in the series, and let’s wish they can bounce back, but this MyCareer is fun and entertaining, as always.
