WWE matches of the week #20 – Hell in a Cell special

Hell In A Cell
WWE Raw Tag Team Championship
Dolph Ziggler & Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins

The WWE Raw Tag Team Championship match between titleholders Drew McIntyre & Dolph Ziggler and challengers Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins was easily the match of the night. It was given a large chunk of time to develop and was worked to near perfection by those involved.

Double-teaming, near-falls aplenty, a back-and-forth between two powerfully represented teams and you have gold. The spots were unique and fitting of the characters. Everything simply went brilliantly. It’s such a shame that they are used as fodder to get the feud between Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman over.

No one looked week and they set up a one-on-one feud between Ambrose and McIntyre very well with Dean squaring up to the much larger former NXT Champion like the scary hard lunatic he is.

Hell In A Cell
WWE Championship
AJ Styles (c) vs. Samoa Joe

A lot of people had a problem with this one as far as I’ve read, but for me, this was a very solid bout with one of the best intrigue driven endings in months, maybe years. After plenty of action in a story that has become increasingly personal between two people who have shared entire careers with each other, Joe locks Styles in the Coquina Clutch, things are fading for AJ but he manages to roll the ‘Submission Machine’ up for a pin. Joe doesn’t attempt to kick out, however, he simply continues to hold the champ in the maneuver.

When the bell rings, Joe’s face is filled with relief and the resemblance of a smile. He raises his hand in victory. Then the ring announcer utters the words, “and still.” The smile goes and Joe is irate. He tells the ref AJ tapped. He tells the commentators AJ tapped. About 10 minutes later when Kevin Dunn wakes up to do his job, we finally see another camera angle that shows AJ tapping out to three on Joe’s body before the referee counts to three on the pin. Joe won. But the ref never saw it.

Amazing. What a match. What a finish. I can’t wait to see their next encounter.
