WWE SummerSlam 2024 is looking set to be stacked, not just in terms of quality matches but also top storyline developments filled with twists and turns.

Despite some ‘twists’ – such as Roman Reigns’ return – being more an expectancy than an actual surprise, there is still scope for our expectations to be subverted.

So whether it’s big returns, faction breakups, heel turns or title changes – here are seven big surprises for WWE SummerSlam 2024.

7. Seth Rollins Accidentally Costs Drew McIntyre At WWE SummerSlam

It’s being reported that Seth Rollins is set to play a major role in the planned match between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre at SummerSlam.

While some had theorised that The Visionary could join the match in a triple-threat situation, WWE are instead looking to add Rollins into the fold as a special guest referee.

If Rollins does in fact don the stripes of a WWE official he is almost certainly going to play a part in the match’s finish somehow.

The first scenario that comes to mind is one that reminiscent of a match from years gone by.

That being when Shawn Michaels refereed the WWE Championship match between Bret Hart and The Undertaker at SummerSlam 1997.

Much like Hart antagonised Michaels into swinging at him with a chair – only to accidentally strike Taker, we could see the same happening with Punk and Rollins, leading to Rollins inadvertently costing The Scottish Warrior the match.

This could then further the story between all three men and set up a potential triple-threat later down the line.
