Adam Copeland Reveals Reason For Cope AEW Name Change AEW

The Rated R Superstar Adam Copeland has addressed the reasoning behind the decision to change his AEW name to ‘Cope’.

Seven months on from suffering a broken tibia during a Barbed Wire Steel Cage match with Malakai Black at AEW Double or Nothing in May, Adam Copeland made his long-awaited return at AEW Worlds End 2024.

Immediately confronting AEW World Champion Jon Moxley and the Death Riders along with FTR, Copeland, Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler would then join forces to compete in a trios match against Moxley’s group on AEW Dynamite: Fight for the Fallen on January 1.

Despite returning just days earlier as Adam Copeland, the WWE Hall of Famer was billed as ‘Cope’ – which has been used as his official name on AEW programming ever since.

Addressing the change during an interview with Stephen Brunt on Up Close, Cope addressed the change, saying:

“I go to AEW, and now I’m Copeland, or Cope. I’m trying to get the Cope thing (over) because it just looks sexier on a marquee.”

Cope most recently competed in a 12-man tag team match on AEW Collision: Maximum Carnage, teaming with FTR, Powerhouse Hobbs and The Outrunners to take on the Death Riders (Moxley, Wheeler Yuta & Claudio Castagnoli) and The Learning Tree (Chris Jericho, Big Bill and Bryan Keith).

Cope’s team won the match, with the 12-time WWE World Champion seemingly edging closer to a one-on-one match with Moxley.
