A top AEW star has reflected on winning his first title in the company at Dynamite Grand Slam 2022 and why the moment had such personal significance.
Back in September 2022, The Acclaimed (Anthony Bowens & Max Caster) challenged Swerve in our Glory (Keith Lee & Swerve Strickland) at the legendary tennis venue Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Bowens and Caster came out victorious, to the rapturous response of the NYC faithful, however, for Bowens the win felt that much more personal for two reasons.
Bowens recently spoke on the AEW Unrestricted podcast, recalling the surreal nature of the moment and why it was such a “special” night for the New Jersey native.
Bowens said:
“One of my best friends – his name is Julien – is a tennis fan and anytime we would go to Shea Stadium or Citi Field, we’d go, ‘You know, I think Arthur Ashe would be a good place for a wrestling show.'”
“And we said that years before it was even a thought.”
“Fast forward, I’m with AEW and we are fighting for the tag team titles at Arthur Ashe.”
Upon winning Bowens miraculously spotted his father amongst the rampant audience, something that made the entire moment that much better, Bowens added:
“We take it home. Crazy, crazy experience.
“Best part of the night though is out of the (thousands of people), I see my dad there cheering.”
“I don’t know how.
“I zeroed in on (my father) and it, like, was a very special moment.”
The Acclaimed would go on to hold the title for 140 days, dropping them in controversial fashion to The Gunns in February of this year.
However, now, along with Daddy Ass Billy Gunn, Bowens and Caster are in pursuit of the AEW Trios Championship, recently securing a win on this week’s Dynamite (July 5) to aid them on that course.
