New AEW Signings Reportedly Had WWE Interest

New AEW Signings Reportedly Had WWE Interest WWE

A recently confirmed AEW signing had interest from WWE during their period of free agency according to a recent report.

Tony Khan confirmed that Aussie Open (Kyle Fletcher & Mark Davis) were All Elite on Twitter in something of a surprise announcement.

On the May 28 episode of AEW Dynamite, Fletcher was involved in the opening match on the show for the International Championship against Orange Cassidy.

With Khan bringing both members of the team into AEW, we’re unlikely to see Aussie Open in action, with Davis suffering an injury that forced the pair to vacate the IWGP Tag Team Championship and NJPW STRONG Tag Team, as announced by Fletcher at NJPW Resurgence on May 21 2023.

With previous rumors suggesting that the pair were free agents thanks to a tweet from Davis, Fightful Select (subscription required) has provided further details on the path of Aussie Open to AEW.

According to Fightful Select, Aussie Open were working for NJPW without a contract and there had been interest from WWE to sign the pair.

As recently as May 21, AEW were confident that they would be signing Fletcher and Davis.

Fightful Select goes onto report that “several other members of the tag team division” had been influential in the signing.

They also had support within WWE, too, although an “unofficial hiring freeze” was in effect that had also seen the likes of Jay White and Komander signing with Tony Khan.

It was also revealed that there were “short term plans” for Aussie Open in AEW even before Mark Davis suffered his injury.

The report also states that Tony Khan paid for Mark Davis’ surgery himself before the team were under AEW contract.

After AEW Dynamite on May 24, we now head towards Double or Nothing on Sunday.
