Some backstage news and notes regarding the FTW Championship that was revived by Taz on last night’s AEW Fyter Fest have come to light.
Taz awarded the strap to Brian Cage one week ahead of Cage challenging Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship at Fight for the Fallen on July 15.
PWInsider has provided some news on why and how the belt can be used in AEW after being used in ECW in the past.
The report notes that ECW never actually owned the title, hence why its ownership never transferred over to WWE. Taz himself designed, created and owned the belt.
He also holds the copyright on the design, which basically means he can do whatever he wants with it, as well as the FTW intellectual property.
The belt was debuted by Taz in 1998 in ECW and retired in 1999. He has held onto it since then, and the belt given to Brian Cage last night is legitimately the same one.
