A current AEW champion has been challenged to a champion vs champion match by a NJPW star ahead of Wrestle Kingdom 19.
With AEW set to participate in the NJPW Wrestle Dynasty crossover event on January 5, there had been some speculation about AEW stars potentially competing at Wrestle Kingdom 19 the night prior.
A big challenge has now been made for a champion vs champion match, with a notable star calling out AEW International Champion Konosuke Takeshita.
Takeshita notably defended his gold against TJP at Friday’s (November 8) Fighting Spirit Unleashed show.
NEVER Openweight Champion Shingo Takagi confronted Takeshita after the match, challenging him to a match at the January 4 Tokyo Dome show.
Takagi said:
Forgive the interruption. Another great match, Takeshita. You want to wrestle me, right? Let’s do it. Will it be the AEW International Champion or the NEVER Champ? Let’s find out who’s strongest January 4 at Wrestle Kingdom 19.
The NJPW Global Twitter account has indicated that Tomohiro Ishii will face the winner at Wrestle Dynasty, writing:
Champion versus Champion January 4?? Ishii awaiting the winner January 5???
Takeshita notably competed in this year’s G1 Climax tournament, making it to the quarterfinals before losing to eventual finalist Yota Tsuji.
