AEW’s Cope Addresses John Cena’s WWE Heel Turn

AEW’s Cope Addresses John Cena’s WWE Heel Turn AEW/WWE

AEW star Cope (Adam Copeland) has addressed the recent heel turn of one of his most notable WWE rivals – John Cena.

Now reigning atop WWE for a record 17th time as Undisputed WWE Champion, John Cena has reinvented himself for his final year as an active competitor – turning heel for the first time in over two decades back at March’s Elimination Chamber PLE.

One of Cena’s most memorable antagonists during his run as WWE’s top babyface came in the form of Cope (fka Edge), with the pair feuding for the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships on several occasions throughout the mid to late 2000s.

During a recent appearance on First Up with Korolnek & Colaiacovo, Cope was asked about Cena’s heel turn, to which he said:

“I generally don’t watch wrestling just because I’m burned out in terms…I think it’s one of those deals when you’re doing it, watching it can be all consuming and I told myself in coming back this time that I wasn’t going to let it do that to me.

:I have a family and two kids. My downtime is spent with them or watching hockey as opposed to critiquing and pulling apart of wrestling shows. I get my clips from Instagram and I’ll watch them there. I don’t watch the full story, the follow throughs, and all the little beats here and there.

“I don’t really know how it went, but a lot of people were talking about it. When you get a character that has been around for that long as a babyface, to turn, it’s like when Hogan turned and joined the NWO. It’s always a good shot in the arm for the business, for sure.”

Cena is set to defend the Undisputed WWE Championship at WWE Backlash on May 10 against a familiar foe of both he and Cope – Randy Orton, with the event taking place in The Viper’s hometown of St. Louis, MO.

Cope is currently off AEW TV after being attacked by FTR at AEW Dynasty 2025.
