AEW Star Breaks Character To Call Recent Match A ‘Dream Come True’ AEW

AEW’s Mercedes Mone has reflected upon a match that she described as a ‘dream come true’, teasing adding another title to her collection.

The match in question took place on the April 16 episode of AEW Dynamite and saw Mone defeat Athena to progress in the Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament.

The match saw a reaction from WWE’s Naomi, who is very familiar with both competitors, seeming to send love and flowers to the duo.

In the latest issue of her Mone Mag, the AEW TBS Champion reflected on her determination throughout the match before revealing how she admired Athena, stating:

“Just over a year ago, I made my AEW debut at TD Garden, and returning now feels like a full-circle moment.

“This time, I stepped into the ring with a new vibe, a new energy, and a fierce determination that can only come from growth and experience.

“Facing Athena was not just a match, but a dream come true. I’ve admired her since our indie days—her creativity and innovation in the ring are truly unmatched.”

Mone would then reflect on learning that Athena had signed with WWE in September 2015, joining NXT, writing:

“I still remember the excitement when Sara Del Rey told me Athena had signed to NXT. I was eager to one day share the ring with her, and finally, that dream became a reality at this incredible event. Let me tell you, this match was one for the books!

“Athena is a powerhouse, and after stepping back from the curtain, all I could think was, wow! Imagine the incredible stories we could tell if we had a pay-per-view match together. That’s something I can’t wait to build towards in the future.”

Although the pair did share the ring a number of times in WWE, it was mostly in tag team and multi-woman matches as opposed to a one-on-one encounter.

One of their earliest encounters saw the then-Ember Moon defeat Ruby Riott and the then-Sasha Banks in a Money in the Bank Qualifying Triple Threat match on the April 23, 2018, episode of WWE Raw.

Athena is the current ROH Women’s World Champion, in a reign that Mone could see herself bringing to an end, concluding:

“While she’s rocked that ROH title for over 800 days, I can’t help but think how great it would look around my waist.”

While Athena may be the longest-reigning ROH Women’s World Champion, Mone stands as the longest-reigning NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion.

The finals of the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament take place at AEW Double or Nothing on May 25, 2025.

The women’s tournament finals will see Mercedes Mone face Jamie Hayter after the latter’s victory over Kris Statlander.

Meanwhile, Will Ospreay faces Hangman Adam Page at in the finals after their respective victories over Konosuke Takeshita and Kyle Fletcher.
