AEW Dynamite Match Awarded Five Stars

This week’s AEW Dynamite New Year’s Smash show saw Kenny Omega successfully defend his AEW World Championship against Rey Fenix of the Lucha Brothers and Death Triangle.

The match was truly incredible, as was what went down after the bout, with The Good Brothers debuting in AEW and reforming The Bullet Club with The Young Bucks and the aforementioned Omega.

In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer has given the match the illustrious five-star rating, calling it probably the best match in the history of AEW Dynamite:

Kenny Omega retained the AEW title over Rey Fenix in 17:00 of a ***** match. My thought is that this was the best match in Dynamite history, beating out Omega vs Pac and Nick Jackson vs. Fenix. Fenix was given free reign by Omega and he hit every spot perfect. Omega hit a huracanrana out of nowhere. Fenix used one as well. Fenix did a springboard into a huracanrana on the floor. Fenix did a dive over the barricade but Omega caught him with a snap dragon suplex on the floor. Omega dropped Fenix’s back on the barricade. Fenix did a tope en reverso as well as a triple springboard dropkick and a flip dive where Fenix’s legs nailed the barricade hard. Fenix got right back up. Fenix did this incredible spot where he flipped over Omega and German suplexed him and Omega nearly landed on his head. Fenix did a double springboard double foot stomp to the back. Omega hit a knee and Fenix did a nip up into a superkick. Fenix was bleeding from the chest from Omega’s chops. Fenix tried a tornillo but Omega hit a knee. Omega did a power bomb and V trigger but Fenix kicked out. Omega tried a One Winged Angel and Fenix reversed into a poison rana. He went top the top but Don Callis distracted Fenix. Fenix ran down the stage and jumped into the ring with a diamond cutter followed by a Thunder driver for a near fall. Fenix went for an Eddy Guerrero frog splash but Omega got his knees up. Fenix came off the top rope and Omega caught him and nailed him with a J driller and used a V trigger and got the pin after the One Winged Angel.

The match is only the second match in Dynamite history to earn the illustrious five-star rating from Dave Meltzer, the first being the Parking Lot brawl between Proud and Powerful and Best Friends from back in September.
