Will Ospreay has opened up about the issues surrounding AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door that led to his eventual opponent.
AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door took place in June 2022 but would see a number of changes to the line up before the date of the pay-per-view.
Among the matches that were originally planned with CM Punk versus Hiroshi Tanahashi for the AEW World Championship, which was scrapped due to injury.
There were also abandoned plans for CM Punk & FTR to take on United Empire (Ospreay and Aussie Open (Mark Davis & Kyle Fletcher)).
Tony Khan had also previously revealed that he was the impact that not only Punk’s injury had on the card, but Bryan Danielson’s sidelining, too.
In the end, Ospreay would face Orange Cassidy with the AEW star unable to unseat the then-IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion.
Will Ospreay has now given some insight into the changing plans and shared his opinion of Orange Cassidy, saying to Dark Puroresu Flowsion:
“The original plans for FD were built around the matches you could get outta Bryan, Omega & Punk. So once they all weren’t clear it was wide open.
“OC doesn’t get his flowers, he is truly great.”
With AEW coming to Ospreay’s home turf, he has spoken about his hopes for AEW All In taking place at Wembley Stadium.
AEW’s Jungle Boy also named Will Ospreay as one of his dream opponents in a recent Q&A.
The card for this week’s edition of AEW Dynamite is as follows:
No Holds Barred – Julia Hart vs. Anna Jay
Open House Rules match for the AEW Trios Championship – House of Black (c) vs. Bandido & Best Friends
AEW International Championship – Orange Cassidy (c) vs. Daniel Garcia
Double Jeopardy Match – Claudio Castagnoli vs. Rey Fenix
Steel Cage Match – Kenny Omega vs. Jon Moxley
