AEW’s Jim Ross Reacts To Corey Graves’ WWE Frustration

AEW’s Jim Ross Reacts To Corey Graves’ WWE Frustration AEW, WWE

Veteran AEW commentator Jim Ross has reacted to Corey Graves venting his frustration regarding his position in WWE.

On Monday, January 13 Corey Graves took to social media to express his unhappiness regarding his current position in the company after being moved from SmackDown to WWE NXT.

After being pulled from the following night’s NXT show (January 14), there was a week’s worth of reports and rumors regarding Graves’ status and long-term future in the company.

While Graves would eventually return to the NXT commentary booth for last night’s show (January 21) and today’s WWE Speed (January 22), one of WWE’s all-time greatest commentators has weighed in on the situation.

Speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, AEW’s Jim Ross reacted to the situation by referencing his own similar experiences in WWE.

JR said:

“How many times has that happened to me? And here I am, jolly, happy, healthy as an old horse, and I’ve got nothing to bitch about.

“I remember this classic line from The Sopranos, where Tony was talking to his cousin Tony, and cousin Tony was talking about how he wanted to start a massage parlour, a legit therapeutic massage parlour. And he just got out of prison trying to get his life started, but he needed some extra cash. The extra cash came in the form of a hit, as I recall. And he started complaining about that life. And this classic line was, from Tony Soprano: ‘This is the life we chose’.

“And that is very synonymous with some issues in wrestling that many of us have gone through. So, I feel badly that he feels like he’s been left behind, and maybe he has, but… would you trade Pat McAfee and his broadcast platform for Corey Graves? I wouldn’t, just to be honest with you.

“And Corey Graves probably is more learned and has a better skillset as far as his internal knowledge than Pat McAfee, but Pat McAfee’s got a platform that reaches from border to border. He’s got a huge footprint, and I applaud Pat McAfee for his entrepreneurship and his promotional instincts.

“I wish he wasn’t unhappy, I’ll say that. But, man, I saw a tweet from Jonathan Coachman responding to your question, and he said something like, ‘It’s happened to JR five times’. I didn’t keep track of it, I had no clue, I swear to god. It’s not something you register or carry around with you like a memory – it’s not something I like to remember, they were bad days.

“And I was heartbroken, and I was angry, but I was not gonna let people misjudging my talent and my accent and my Bell’s palsy – the shit that I overcame to be on television, if I rethink it, I probably would have done something else. Because the odds were so slim that I’d get back in that game in WWE.”

Throughout Graves’ absence from WWE TV it was speculated that the situation could be a part of larger storyline, but there didn’t appear to be any indication of that upon his return to NXT last night.

In an update from Fightful Select posted before his return to NXT, it was reported that those close to Graves had given no indication that his frustrations were a work of any kind.
