A former AEW has compared himself to the wrestling legend and former WWE star King Kong Bundy, despite obvious differences.
In a virtual signing with K&S Collectibles, Joey Janela made the comparison to the 1.93m tall, 208kg powerhouse, saying:
“I’m like King Kong Buddy of AEW. A couple [of] big matches, maybe I’ll come back.”
Janela, who stands at 1.75m and weighs 89kg, wasn’t referring to his stature when he compared himself to Bundy, but to the big man’s WWE run.
Bundy was featured on WWE television from 1985 to 1988.
At WrestleMania II, Bundy would fall to Hulk Hogan in a steel cage match for the then-WWF World Heavyweight Championship.
He would continue to be featured following this encounter, including with ‘midget’ wrestlers at WrestleMania III and at the King of the Ring in 1987.
He would leave WWF in 1988 and go into semi-retirement.
He would return to WWE in 1994, joining Ted Dibiase’s Million Dollar Corporation and remain with the company until 1995.
Janela, by contrast, spent three years in AEW before being released in May 2022 and noted, during the signing that he will be on “a couple of TV shows” in the near future.
He recently revealed that an incident with Eddie Kingston led to him not re-signing with the company and heading to DDT in Japan instead.
He did say “never say never” when broaching the topic of a possible AEW return.
Janela has been critical of AEW programming previously, specifically AEW Dark.
