Backstage Issues Potentially Involved In Jon Moxley AEW Match AEW

Jon Moxley faces Konosuke Takeshita at AEW Double or Nothing on May 26, 2024, in an IWGP World Heavyweight Championship Eliminator match.

The match was announced by Tony Khan on his own Twitter account with the purpose of the Eliminator stipulation being that the bout wouldn’t be a title match, but if Takeshita wins, he’ll get one at a later date.

Dave Meltzer has taken a dive into why the match is non-title on a pay-per-view in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, stating:

I would suspect Moxley vs. Takeshita being non-title is because New Japan controls the IWGP belt and doesn’t like to announce title bouts with another one scheduled. With Moxley vs. Evil at Dominion on 6/9, that would make it difficult for Moxley to defend before that date.

Having said that, this is pro wrestling and all rules are situational. In this case with a major PPV, Moxley vs. Takeshita shouldn’t be non-title, especially since New Japan won’t want their world champion to lose to a DDT wrestler. Maybe there are political issues for them approving a DDT wrestler getting a title match.

But from a fan standpoint on a major PPV, both sides should have worked together to make it a title match unless the idea is for Moxley to lose to set it up for later.

Moxley defeated Tetsuya Naito at Windy City Riot on April 12, 2024 to become the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion.

Meltzer has recently stated that Naito could be set to face Moxley at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door in June of this year.

Takeshita recently revealed that he “didn’t have any fun wrestling ever since (he) got to America.”

He would clarify the comments on social media saying it is “not necessarily a bad thing” and that it takes time “to shine at the top.”

Takeshita wrestled for DDT-Pro for ten years before making his AEW debut in 2021.
