AEW’s Kenny Omega Compares NJPW Star To CM Punk Incident

Former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega has compared NJPW STRONG Openweight Champion Gabe Kidd to CM Punk incident.

At NJPW Power Struggle 2024, Kenny Omega made his return to the company for the first time since Wrestle Kingdom 17 in 2023. He teased a potential in-ring return for the Wrestle Dynasty event on January 5 in the Tokyo Dome.

This was also Omega’s first appearance in a ring since the May 1 edition of AEW Dynamite.

After his in-ring promo, Omega got into a backstage physical altercation with NJPW STRONG Openweight Champion Gabe Kidd, which you can read here.

Speaking with Tokyo Sports, Kenny Omega discussed the backstage fight with Gabe Kidd and compared it to the incident with CM Punk in AEW. Explaining how the backstage fight with Kidd started, Omega said:

“When we first met, I was able to greet X properly. But then Gabe said something like, ‘Who the hell do you think you are, thinking you want to enter this promotion when you want to?’

“It’s true that I’d gotten Gabe’s name wrong in an interview before, and that was my fault. But then he suddenly pushed me and took a fighting stance.

“I immediately remembered the incident that happened in AEW.”

The “incident” Omega is referring to is the backstage altercation with CM Punk, Ace Steel, The Young Bucks and himself that took place at AEW All Out 2022. Omega continued on to explain that this incident was different since he is not an EVP for New Japan and it was “self defense,” saying:

“I won’t say his name, but I thought that Gabe was unfit to be a professional, just like that guy. I’ve said a lot of bad things about AEW, but that’s irrelevant now. For now, I can’t trust Gabe.”

It remains to be seen who Kenny Omega will face in his potential in-ring return at Wrestle Dynasty at the time of this writing.
