AEW
AEW’s Kenny Omega has named one of his favorite inter-promotional matches on the anniversary of his return to another company.
An AEW mainstay since its inception, serving as an executive vice president, Omega joined the company after his NJPW contract expired in January 2019.
A former IWGP Heavyweight Champion, he would make his return to NJPW at Historic X-Over on November 20, 2022.
His return to NJPW would be set up a match at Wrestle Kingdom the following year, which he has gone on to declare as easily one of his favorites.
That match would see Omega defeat Will Ospreay for the IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion on the first night of the January pay-per-view, with the AEW star reflecting on Twitter:
“Inter-promotional matches can sometimes be really nifty. This one is easily one of my favorites.”
At the time, Ospreay was an NJPW star, having not yet signed with AEW, something he wouldn’t do until November 2023.
The Wrestle Kingdom match would garner a six-and-a-quarter star rating from Dave Meltzer after his Wrestling Observer Newsletter review.
Ospreay would later reflect on his feud with Omega, noting The Cleaner “represents the identity of what AEW initially was.”
AEW Forbidden Door in 2023 would see Omega lose the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship back to Ospreay.
Inter-promotional matches can sometimes be really nifty. This one is easily one of my favorites.
