While AEW’s immediate focus will be on Double or Nothing this Sunday, May 28, just under a month after that the company will be hosting its third PPV of the year, the highly anticipated second annual Forbidden Door.
The event, that will see AEW and NJPW crossover on June 25, is one that provides a lot of fantasy booking matchups from fans and talent alike.
However, as the event draws closer it seems as if many of those dream matches are falling victim to ill-timed injuries.
Not only was long-rumoured Forbidden Door competitor Mercedes Mone injured at NJPW STRONG Resurgence on Sunday May 21, but that same event saw the IWGP World Tag Team Champions Aussie Open (Kyle Fletcher & Mark Davis) relinquish their titles due to Davis suffering a meniscus tear.
While not yet announced, one seemingly teased Forbidden Door match was set to see IWGP Tag Champs Aussie Open take on AEW Tag Champs FTR.
An encounter had been teased by both AEW and NJPW on social media, yet due to Davis’ injury it seems as if the two teams will have to wait a while longer.
Discussing the match’s chances of going ahead on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that given the expected recovery time for Davis’ injury, he would likely unfortunately not be healed in time for a match with FTR.
However, given the recent news that Aussie Open have officially signed on the dotted line with AEW it’s only a matter of time before we get to see the two teams lock up in the ring.
Prior to signing with AEW, Aussie Open were reportedly the subject of interest from FTR’s former employers WWE, to read the full story follow this link here.
