The January 7, 2024, episode of AEW Dynamite was a big one, with implications for Sting’s retirement match and Tony Khan’s big announcement.
The big announcement would be the upcoming AEW Dynamite: Big Business which is reportedly to feature the debut of Mercedes Mone.
As for Sting’s retirement match, we saw the Young Bucks attack Darby Allin and the WWE Hall of Famer as they continued their feud.
Dave Meltzer has addressed backstage morale in AEW following the episode in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, writing:
A couple of people have noted that the morale has really picked up and is the best in some time, even if the rating this week was universally disappointing for such a loaded show that was promoted as the biggest Dynamite of the year, with a match to determine the Revolution main event, a title match involving Sting where the expectation was he would win, and a Tony Khan big announcement.
Although Sting had been reluctant to hold a title in AEW according to reports, he was “all smiles” backstage following his recent tag team win with the decision to switch titles made “well in advance” and meeting Sting’s approval.
Swerve Strickland has also reflected on the high morale in AEW, saying it has been “excellent” and that he “seen any issues.”
He would also note that he also hadn’t “seen issues when morale was said to be down”.
The recent episode of AEW Dynamite saw the tag team championships change hands with Sting and Allin being victorious.
It was also recently revealed that Chris Jericho is the highest-paid wrestler in AEW according to Dave Meltzer.
