An update has emerged regarding AEW’s plans to stage a big match featuring reigning TBS Champion Mercedes Mone.
Two weeks ago it was reported that AEW were planning to book a match between The CEO and ROH Women’s World Champion Athena, with some in AEW claiming to could take place as soon as this Sunday’s Dynasty pay-per-view (April 6).
With the pair having a face-off the week after this was reported, a new update has emerged on AEW’s plans for the match, courtesy of Fightful Select.
Despite some assuming that Athena vs. Mone will take place at All In Texas in July, Fightful has been told that there are “other creative suggestions” for that show, with the two stars “weren’t put in the same tournament by accident” – that being the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament, which both stars declared for on Saturday’s’ AEW Collision (March 29).
Despite some in AEW suggesting that Athena vs. Mone could still be booked for Dynasty, Fightful could not confirm that was in fact the plan, with it only said that the match is expected to happen in the coming months.
Despite teaming together several times during their shared time in WWE, as well as facing off in multiple-women matches, Athena and Mone have never faced each other one-on-one.
We will provide further updates on AEW’s plans for Athena vs. Mone as they become available.
