AEW Star To Retire When Current Contract Expires? AEW

A former AEW World Champion has addressed his retirement plans, indicating that his career could end when his current contract expires.

Having begun his in-ring wrestling career back in 1999, Samoa Joe has had a career that has taken him to Ring of Honor, TNA Wrestling, WWE, and now to AEW, with tours of Japan and Mexico among his international appearances.

During a recent appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, the two-time TNT Champion was asked about retirement.

Asked if he had paid any thought to when his in-ring career may end, Samoa Joe stated:

“Yeah, I do a lot. It’s probably coming sooner than later, which is fine.

“I think a lot of people from my generation, from what I’ve seen, if they have the ability, we’ve done our best to kind of save up.

“We definitely don’t want to outstay our welcome, because we may have been privy to a few people who may have done that in their careers.

“I definitely don’t want to be that guy.”

As for when he sees himself hanging up his boots, Samoa Joe hinted that the end of his wrestling career would be sooner than a new contract being signed, saying:

“No, I think it’s just really based on when my contract runs out. I think exploring those options as they go.

“Yeah, I will do this for a little longer and then yeah I think the end is probably sooner than any new deal being signed.”

Recently, in AEW, Samoa Joe has been teaming with HOOK and Katsuyori Shibata as The Opps

Samoa Joe’s career has taken him beyond AEW, with the second season of Twisted Metal due to be released in mid-2025.

In the Peacock series based on the video game franchise, Samoa Joe plays Sweet Tooth, with the character voiced by Will Arnett.
