AEW Star Says Retirement Crossed Their Mind After Injury AEW

An AEW star has opened up about their injury recovery ahead of their in-ring return, noting that retirement did cross their mind.

Skye Blue will compete in the AEW Women’s Championship Eliminator four-way at Dynamite Beach Break, against Toni Storm, AZM and Mina Shirakawa.

This will be Skye Blue’s first match since the July 20, 2024 Collision episode, when she suffered a broken fibula during her match against Hikaru Shida.

Speaking with Q101, Blue recalled suffering the injury, noting:

“I’ve caught dives before so I didn’t think anything of it. As she jumped, I could tell something was off with it. It was either her head was hitting the floor or I was gonna dive and catch her. I dove and caught her.

“The second I felt it, I had rolled over to get up because I had to crawl to where I was going, I felt my foot dangling from my leg…I could feel it detached. It was the grossest feeling that I’ve ever felt.

While discussing her recovery, Blue noted that the idea of retirement crossed her mind several times, but Kyle Fletcher helped her to push her through her recovery.

She explained:

“It was so much harder than I anticipated. I didn’t realize how much you use your leg for.

“Even just learning how to walk again was difficult. I was butt-scooting up stairs. And when (Fletcher) had to go to work, Robbie Eagles stayed with us for a little while.

“(Retirement) definitely crossed through my head a bunch of times, especially at night when I couldn’t sleep and it’d be like four in the morning. There were times where I would have to lay with my leg straight because if I moved it, I was just in pain.

“But this one (Kyle Fletcher) was the best because he’d be like ‘No, tell those voices to shut up because you’re gonna wrestle, you’re not gonna just sit on this couch and mope.’ He was by far the biggest supporter I could’ve ever asked for.”

The AEW Women’s Championship Eliminator four-way will also be Mina Shirakawa’s first AEW match since officially signing with the company.

Shirakawa has now commented on this match, which you can read more about right here.
