People within AEW reportedly believe that an AEW star is finishing up with the company amid speculation of a return to WWE.
To kick off tonight’s episode of AEW Dynamite, Buddy Matthews of the House of Black faced off against Will Ospreay, with Ospreay scoring the victory over Buddy.
After the match, Ospreay took to the microphone, where he praised both Buddy Matthews and Brody King, encouraging both to step out of the shadow of Malakai Black, who has not appeared on AEW television since November.
This led to speculation about Black’s status with the company, and Fightful has provided an update on his status.
Per Fightful Select (subscription required), those within the company that Fightful spoke to were of the belief that Black was finishing up with AEW, if he hadn’t already.
Those within the company did not clarify if he would be appearing on AEW television again.
Fightful had previously reported that there were option years on Malakai’s contract after 2025, with Tony Khan previously noting that he had Black under contract until 2027.
Fightful can’t say definitively that his contract is up, or that an option had been declined, picked up or anything transactional.
Black is currently still listed on AEW’s roster page.
We will provide any updates on Black’s AEW status as they become available.
