During a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, AEW star Ricky Starks opened up about getting a WWE offer the day of his Dynamite debut match against Cody Rhodes for the TNT Championship in June.
Starks told Van Vliet that he was called by people within WWE, who said that they’d been following his work, the day that he made his debut for AEW in a losing effort to Cody Rhodes:
“The funny thing is, the day that I wrestled Cody, I got a phone call from WWE saying “we’ve been watching you and we want to bring you in.”. I said “Oh really? Interesting… of all days”.
It is unclear whether or not WWE called Starks after his match with Cody because they were impressed with his performance, or before the match when it emerged that he’d be facing the TNT Champion on the show.
Ricky Starks impressed so much in the match that AEW President Tony Khan opted to sign the former NWA star to a full-time contract. This was a similar situation for Eddie Kingston several weeks later.
