AEW Stars Planned For NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 NJPW/AEW

A big update has emerged on AEW’s presence at the upcoming NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 event.

AEW and NJPW held their first official crossover event , Forbidden Door, on June 26. Since then, there has been speculation that more AEW stars will appear at shows in Japan.

Per Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, there are plans for some AEW wrestlers to compete at the January 2023 Wrestle Kingdom event.

Meltzer said:

“I don’t know how many, but I have in fact been told of certain plans for AEW wrestlers on Wrestle Kingdom. There are plans for certain AEW guys to be at the Tokyo Dome show, yes.”

AEW has had a presence at Wrestle Kingdom before, with then-AEW Champion Chris Jericho facing Hiroshi Tanahashi at the 2020 event. It was in the build to this bout that the term ‘forbidden door’ was coined, with Tanahashi stating that he’d pay AEW a visit if he beat Jericho.

At the same event, Jon Moxley defeated Lance Archer for the IWGP US Title.

Several AEW stars have visited Japan this year, with Wheeler YUTA competing in the Best of the Super Juniors tournament, and Lance Archer currently wrestling in the G1 Climax.

IWGP US Champion Will Ospreay and NJPW STRONG Openweight Tag Team Champions Aussie Open are slated to compete in the AEW Trios Championship tournament. The NJPW side will face off against Death Triangle in first round action.
